Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Malayalam action thriller Khalifa has experienced a noticeable decline in its domestic box office performance on the second day of its theatrical run. The film, directed by Vysakh, earned approximately Rs 2.30 crore in India net on Friday, according to industry tracking reports.
The second day collection represents a decline of around 57 percent compared with the film’s opening day figure of Rs 5.35 crore. With the latest collection added, Khalifa has reportedly reached an India net total of approximately Rs 7.65 crore after two days.
Khalifa was released in theatres on August 20 during the Onam festive period. The movie generated interest because of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s presence in the lead role and the reunion between the actor and director Vysakh after several years.
The film also features Neil Nitin Mukesh, Malvika Sharma, Shammi Thilakan, Indrans, Renji Panicker and Sanju Sivram in important roles. Mohanlal is also associated with the project, while the film has been positioned as the beginning of a larger franchise.
The first day brought a comparatively strong response. Different trade trackers have reported slightly different figures because box office numbers can vary depending on whether they represent India net, India gross or worldwide gross collections. One report placed the opening day India net at Rs 5.35 crore, while other reports have cited slightly different figures.
On Day 2, the film recorded an overall occupancy of around 32 percent for its Malayalam screenings. Night shows reportedly recorded the strongest audience turnout, indicating that the movie continued to attract viewers despite the decline in overall collection.
Kerala remains the most important domestic market for the film. As a Malayalam production, Khalifa has received its strongest response from the home state, while collections from other Indian markets have contributed to the overall domestic total.
The overseas market has provided an additional boost. According to reports, Khalifa earned approximately Rs 4 crore from international markets on its second day. Its cumulative overseas gross was reported at around Rs 11 crore after two days. When the domestic and overseas figures are combined, the film’s worldwide gross was estimated at approximately Rs 19.90 crore.
The overseas performance is particularly important because Malayalam cinema has developed a strong international audience, especially in Gulf countries. Films featuring established Malayalam stars often benefit from significant demand among expatriate audiences.
Khalifa revolves around Aamir Ali, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran, and a powerful criminal empire connected to smuggling and international operations. The story combines action, family conflict, revenge and power struggles.
The film is directed by Vysakh and written by Jinu V Abraham. The collaboration between Vysakh and Prithviraj has generated expectations among Malayalam cinema audiences, particularly because the director and actor previously worked together.
The movie is also reportedly planned as the first part of a two film series. The second film has been announced as Khalifa 2 The Legacy, with Mohanlal expected to take a more prominent role while Prithviraj returns as Aamir Ali.
The Day 2 decline does not necessarily determine the film’s final box office outcome. Weekend collections are often influenced by holidays, audience reviews, show availability and word of mouth. Since Khalifa was released during the Onam season, the coming days could play an important role in determining its theatrical performance.
The film also faces competition from other Malayalam releases during the festive season. Audience response and the performance of competing films can influence screen allocation and occupancy over the next several days.
For now, Khalifa has collected approximately Rs 7.65 crore net in India after two days based on reported estimates. Its worldwide performance has been supported by overseas markets, which have contributed a substantial portion of the film’s early earnings.
The next major focus will be the weekend collections. A significant improvement on Saturday and Sunday could help the film recover from the Day 2 decline. If occupancy remains subdued, however, the movie could face greater pressure during the following weekdays.
Box office figures mentioned in early reports are estimates and may be revised as final figures from theatres and distributors become available. Therefore, the reported Rs 2.30 crore Day 2 India net collection should be viewed as an early industry estimate rather than a certified final figure.
Despite the second day drop, Khalifa has established a reasonable opening position and continues to benefit from Prithviraj Sukumaran’s popularity, the Onam release window and its overseas audience.
The film’s performance over the remainder of the weekend will provide a clearer indication of whether it can maintain steady theatrical business and emerge as a successful Malayalam release during the festive season.
