At a time when many parts of India are facing challenges such as irregular LPG supply and increasing fuel prices, a small village in Bihar has demonstrated a sustainable and effective solution. Indrapur village, located in the Araria district, has turned to biogas technology to meet its daily energy needs, reducing its dependence on conventional cooking fuels.

A few months ago, several households in the village decided to install biogas plants with the aim of achieving energy self-sufficiency. Each unit required an investment of around Rs 45000, out of which the government provided a subsidy of approximately Rs 21000. This financial assistance encouraged villagers to adopt the technology without facing a heavy financial burden.

The biogas plants use cattle dung as the primary raw material. In a village where livestock is an integral part of daily life, the availability of cow dung made it a practical and accessible resource. Traditionally, cow dung was used to make fuel cakes or burned directly as firewood. However, by converting it into biogas, villagers have found a more efficient and cleaner alternative.

Over the past three to four months, the biogas plants have been functioning effectively, supplying a consistent source of cooking fuel. Families report that the gas produced is sufficient to cook meals for large households, often serving 15 to 20 members without any interruption. In some cases, the production is enough to support even more families, highlighting the scalability of the solution.

One of the most significant benefits of this transition is the improvement in environmental conditions. The use of biogas has replaced traditional firewood and cow dung cakes, which used to produce smoke and contribute to indoor air pollution. Now, homes in the village are cleaner and free from smoke, leading to better health outcomes, especially for women and children who spend more time in the kitchen.

Additionally, the adoption of biogas has reduced the dependency on LPG cylinders, which were not always available on time. This has eliminated the inconvenience of waiting for gas deliveries and the uncertainty associated with fluctuating prices. Villagers now have a reliable and locally sourced energy solution that meets their daily needs.

The success of Indrapur village serves as an inspiring example for other rural areas across the country. It highlights how locally available resources, combined with government support and community participation, can create sustainable solutions to common problems. As India continues to promote renewable energy and rural development, such initiatives play a crucial role in achieving long-term energy security and environmental sustainability.
