However, urban planning experts have again raised concerns about Raipur’s infrastructure and drainage readiness.

Raipur, Chhattisgarh – A spell of unseasonal rainfall lashed several areas of Raipur on Monday afternoon, catching many residents off guard. The showers brought much-needed relief from the sweltering summer heat but also led to temporary disruptions in parts of the city.

Neighborhoods such as Telibandha, Pandri, Shankar Nagar, and Khamardih reported moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. Within minutes, the streets were wet, and traffic movement slowed down due to water accumulation at key junctions. Local residents shared videos and images on social media showing drenched roads and cloudy skies.

While the sudden rain was welcomed by many as a break from the scorching heat, others expressed concern over the city’s drainage system. Waterlogging was reported in low-lying areas such as Tikrapara and Devendra Nagar, with some pedestrians and two-wheeler riders facing difficulties navigating through the water-filled streets.

According to officials from the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC), emergency teams were dispatched to monitor the situation and clear any blocked drains. “Our teams were on the ground within an hour of the rain starting. We are actively clearing choke points and ensuring traffic remains smooth,” said an RMC spokesperson.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the rainfall was caused by localized atmospheric disturbances and that more intermittent showers can be expected in the coming days. The IMD also advised citizens to stay alert for weather updates and avoid venturing out during intense rainfall periods.

For many residents, especially children and office-goers, the rain provided a refreshing change. “It’s been unbearably hot lately. Today’s rain feels like a blessing, even if it caused some traffic,” said Ramesh Gupta, a shopkeeper in Pandri Market.

However, urban planning experts have again raised concerns about Raipur’s infrastructure and drainage readiness. “Even a short burst of rain leads to waterlogging. This shows that the city needs better stormwater planning,” said environmental activist and civil engineer Sunita Thakur.

Schools and colleges remained open, though some reported reduced attendance due to the sudden change in weather. Traffic police were also seen managing congestion on busy roads and ensuring smooth vehicular flow, particularly around junctions like Jai Stambh Chowk and Pachpedi Naka.

With the IMD forecasting more rain over the week, city officials are urging residents to take precautions. Citizens have been advised to check local weather reports regularly and avoid waterlogged routes.

As the city continues to transition into the pre-monsoon period, experts recommend regular drain-cleaning drives, better public awareness, and infrastructure upgrades to ensure that such brief weather events do not lead to avoidable chaos.
