The Chhattisgarh government has announced an extension of the paddy procurement process to ensure that farmers receive the full benefits of the Minimum Support Price. The decision aims to provide relief to cultivators and ensure that no eligible farmer is left out of the procurement system.
According to state officials, paddy is being procured at a rate of Rs 3100 per quintal. The government has fixed a limit of up to 21 quintals per acre for procurement, allowing farmers to sell a substantial portion of their produce at the assured support price. Authorities stated that agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for nearly 80 percent of the population in the state, making timely procurement crucial for rural income stability.
So far, approximately 5,92,000 metric tonnes of paddy have been procured during the current season. Officials reported that the response from farmers has been strong, with a high percentage of registered cultivators participating in the procurement drive. Compared to the previous season, there has been a marginal increase in farmer participation, reflecting improved outreach and administrative measures.
The extension also provides relief to farmers who faced difficulties during earlier procurement phases. Those whose applications were verified after January 10 have now been given an opportunity to sell their produce. Additionally, farmers who received tokens dated January 28, 29 and 30 but were unable to complete the sale due to logistical or personal reasons can now avail themselves of the extended procurement window.
The state government emphasised that the extension demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding farmer interests. Officials noted that procurement operations are being conducted in an organised manner, with digital token systems and verification procedures in place to maintain transparency and efficiency. Payments are being transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts within a few days of procurement, ensuring timely financial support.
Farmers who have already sold their produce expressed satisfaction with the process. Many stated that the assured price and prompt payment have provided stability amid fluctuating market conditions. The procurement system plays a significant role in protecting farmers from distress sales and price volatility in open markets.
The extension of the procurement period is also expected to stabilise the state’s agricultural economy. By ensuring that a large volume of paddy is purchased at MSP rates, the government aims to strengthen rural purchasing power and maintain steady agricultural output.
Officials added that the procurement centres are equipped with necessary infrastructure to handle the inflow of produce. Measures have been taken to streamline weighing, quality checks and documentation procedures to minimise delays.
With agriculture forming the backbone of the state economy, the continuation and expansion of procurement efforts are seen as critical policy steps. The government has reiterated its commitment to supporting farmers through price assurance, efficient procurement mechanisms and timely payments.
