The Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) party has sharply criticized the Mysuru City Corporation's proposal to rename KRS Road after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The proposal, which is part of a broader initiative to honor the CM, has sparked significant political debate, with JD(S) leaders accusing the Congress-led government of using the move for political gain ahead of upcoming elections.
The JD(S) leadership in Mysuru has termed the decision as partisan and one-sided, claiming that the renaming of such an important public road should be a decision made with broad public consensus, rather than being driven by political considerations. The road in question, which leads to the iconic Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) Dam, has historical significance and is considered a key artery for the city’s infrastructure. The JD(S) has argued that renaming such landmarks in honor of political leaders could set a precedent for further partisan actions in the future.
The proposal to rename KRS Road has also generated discussion in local political circles, with the BJP supporting the initiative, aligning themselves with the Congress government in Mysuru. However, the JD(S) insists that public infrastructure should reflect the collective history and heritage of the city, rather than the legacy of a single political figure.
Opposition leaders have called for an inclusive discussion on the naming of public properties, urging that such decisions be based on historical relevance and community consensus. JD(S) members have demanded the proposal be re-evaluated and reconsidered in a manner that includes input from all political parties and local residents.
The Mysuru City Corporation’s decision to move forward with the proposal has yet to be finalized, and further discussions are expected in the coming weeks. The controversy over renaming KRS Road is likely to fuel ongoing political debates in the region, particularly as Karnataka heads into a period of heightened political activity.
