Union Minister for Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy has announced the establishment of a global standard Automotive Research Association of India ARAI centre in Mandya, Karnataka. The project, estimated to cost Rs 500 crore, is expected to significantly boost the automobile and manufacturing sector in the state. Mandya is also the Lok Sabha constituency represented by Kumaraswamy.
According to the minister, the proposed ARAI centre will serve as a major hub for automotive testing, research, and development. The facility is expected to support automobile manufacturers, component suppliers, and startups by providing advanced testing and certification services. This move is aimed at strengthening Karnataka’s position as a key player in India’s automotive and mobility ecosystem.
Kumaraswamy stated that the land required for the project is being secured with the cooperation of the Karnataka state government. He added that the necessary financial allocation for the centre has already been earmarked, indicating that the project is moving forward as planned. Once completed, the facility will cater not only to Mandya but also to neighbouring regions such as Mysuru and other parts of the state.
The Automotive Research Association of India plays a crucial role in vehicle testing, emission certification, safety standards, and technology development. Establishing a world class centre in Mandya is expected to reduce dependency on facilities located in other states and improve ease of access for manufacturers based in southern India.
Industry experts believe the new centre will attract investments, create skilled employment opportunities, and encourage innovation in areas such as electric vehicles, alternative fuels, and advanced automotive technologies. The presence of a high end research and testing facility is also expected to support small and medium enterprises involved in automotive manufacturing.
Karnataka already hosts a strong industrial base with a growing focus on electric mobility and advanced manufacturing. The proposed ARAI centre aligns with national initiatives aimed at promoting domestic manufacturing, improving vehicle safety standards, and supporting research driven growth in the automotive sector.
The project is also expected to contribute to regional development by improving infrastructure and generating economic activity in Mandya and surrounding districts. Local businesses, educational institutions, and technical professionals are likely to benefit from increased industrial engagement and skill development opportunities.
With the announcement of this investment, the government has signalled its intent to decentralise key industrial facilities and promote balanced regional growth. Further details regarding timelines and construction phases are expected to be announced once land acquisition and preliminary approvals are completed.
