Tamil Nadu Minister R. Nirmal Kumar presented gold rings to newborn babies during a welfare event held in Madurai on Sunday. The programme formed part of the continuing birthday celebrations of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and highlighted the government's focus on maternal and child welfare initiatives.
During the event, the minister personally handed over gold rings to several newborn babies admitted to the hospital. Along with the gold rings, mothers received baby hampers containing essential items for newborn care. The initiative was welcomed by beneficiaries and healthcare workers who attended the programme.
According to party sources, the event was organised ahead of the formal rollout of the "Thaai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam," a flagship welfare programme announced by the Tamil Nadu government. Under the scheme, eligible newborns delivered in government hospitals across the state will receive a one-gram gold ring as a symbolic gift from the government.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had earlier announced that the scheme would be officially launched on September 15, the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai. The government has stated that the initiative is intended to promote institutional deliveries, honour newborn children and support mothers through a welfare-oriented approach.
Officials have said that the programme reflects the cultural tradition of "Thaai Maaman Seer," in which the maternal uncle traditionally presents gifts to a newborn child. Through the scheme, the state government aims to symbolically assume that role by presenting a gold ring to every eligible newborn born in government medical institutions.
The Tamil Nadu government has allocated an annual budget of approximately Rs 755.83 crore for implementing the programme across the state. Administrative arrangements, including the establishment of a dedicated project management unit, are being put in place to ensure smooth implementation and monitoring of the scheme.
The welfare initiative is expected to benefit thousands of families every year. Besides recognizing the birth of a child, the government believes the programme will encourage expectant mothers to choose government hospitals for safe deliveries, thereby strengthening maternal and neonatal healthcare services.
The event in Madurai is being viewed as an outreach programme ahead of the statewide launch. While the minister distributed gold rings to newborns during the function, the official implementation of the government scheme will begin on September 15 as announced by the state government.
Officials have reiterated that further operational guidelines regarding beneficiary eligibility, implementation procedures and distribution mechanisms will continue to be issued before the scheme is formally launched across Tamil Nadu.
