he South India Handicrafts Sales and Exhibition, organized by the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, was inaugurated on Friday in Tiruvannamalai. The exhibition aims to promote India's rich handicraft heritage while providing a direct marketing platform for artisans from different parts of the country.
The exhibition is being held at Vennikkal Annamalai Mahal in Tiruvannamalai and will continue from July 24 to July 30. Visitors have the opportunity to explore a wide collection of handmade products created by skilled artisans representing 25 states across India.
The inaugural ceremony was held in the presence of Tiruvannamalai District Collector Mrs. Vandana Garg, who formally inaugurated the exhibition by lighting the traditional lamp and cutting the ceremonial ribbon. She later visited the exhibition stalls and interacted with artisans, appreciating their craftsmanship and encouraging efforts to preserve India's traditional art forms.
The exhibition has been organized to support artisans by connecting them directly with customers and creating awareness about India's diverse handicraft traditions. Such events also help craftsmen showcase their skills, expand their customer base, and improve their livelihood through direct sales.
Nearly 40 stalls have been set up at the exhibition venue, displaying a wide variety of handcrafted products from different regions of the country. Visitors can purchase traditional handicrafts while also witnessing live demonstrations by artisans, who are creating their products in front of the public. These demonstrations offer visitors a unique opportunity to understand the techniques, creativity, and dedication involved in traditional craftsmanship.
Among the major attractions at the exhibition are eco friendly jute products, banana fibre handicrafts, terracotta toys, decorative home accessories, handmade gift items, traditional utility products, and several other artisan creations. Each product reflects the cultural identity and artistic excellence of its respective region.
The exhibition also promotes sustainable and environmentally friendly products made from natural materials. Many of the displayed items are handcrafted using traditional methods that have been passed down through generations, highlighting India's rich cultural heritage.
Speaking at the inaugural function, M. A. Subburaman, Managing Director of the Madurai based NGO and the organizer of the exhibition, delivered the presidential address. He emphasized the importance of supporting traditional artisans by creating more opportunities for them to market their products directly to consumers. He also noted that such exhibitions play an important role in preserving India's traditional crafts while strengthening the rural economy.
Senior officials from the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts also participated in the event. Regional Director Laxman Rao Atukuri, Deputy Director D. V. Sreenatha, and Assistant Director V. P. Afla Hassan attended the inaugural function and appreciated the efforts of participating artisans.
The exhibition is expected to attract large numbers of visitors, including art enthusiasts, students, tourists, and families interested in exploring India's traditional handicrafts. Besides offering quality handmade products, the event serves as a platform for cultural exchange by bringing together artisans from various states under one roof.
