G Veera Reddy, the superintendent of Karimnagar Government General Hospital, confirmed that 31 students were admitted with complaints of vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.

In a worrying development, 31 students from the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule BC Welfare Residential Gurukul in Sharma Nagar, Karimnagar, fell ill after consuming food at their hostel on the night of January 6. The students, who are aged between 11 and 15 years, developed symptoms of food poisoning, including vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach cramps, shortly after dinner. The meal served to the students that evening included a cauliflower curry, which is now under scrutiny as the potential cause of the illness.

The students, who were part of a group of around 400 enrolled in the Gurukul, began showing signs of illness soon after dinner. By midnight, a significant number of students had developed acute symptoms and were quickly rushed to the government hospital for medical attention. As the hours passed, even more students complained of stomach aches, prompting further evacuations to the hospital.

Dr. G Veera Reddy, the superintendent of Karimnagar Government General Hospital, confirmed that 31 students were admitted with complaints of vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain. The medical team administered treatment immediately upon their arrival. Fortunately, their condition has been stabilised, and the majority of the students were discharged after receiving care. Dr. Reddy mentioned that 23 students were sent home after being treated, while 8 others remained under observation and are expected to recover soon.

The local authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, particularly focusing on the food served to the students. While the authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of the illness, initial speculations point to the cauliflower curry as the source of contamination. The food will undergo testing to ascertain whether it was contaminated or improperly prepared, which could have led to the mass food poisoning.

The Karimnagar administration is also working closely with the State Education Department to ensure that proper safety measures are implemented in the future to prevent such incidents from occurring again. The incident has sparked a wave of concern about the quality and safety of food served in hostels and educational institutions across the state.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs and Member of Parliament from Karimnagar, Bandi Sanjay, expressed his concern on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) over the incident. He urged the state government to take immediate action to ensure the health and safety of the students and to investigate the cause of the suspected food poisoning thoroughly.

“I am deeply concerned about the health of the students of Gurukul who have fallen ill due to suspected food poisoning. The authorities must act swiftly to investigate the source of the contamination and ensure such an incident does not happen again,” Bandi Sanjay said on his official X handle.

Local residents and parents of the students have also raised their voices, demanding a thorough investigation into the food quality and the maintenance of hygiene standards in the hostel kitchens. They have called for regular inspections and quality control measures to ensure the safety of students in residential schools and colleges.

Authorities are expected to release the results of their investigation soon, and depending on the findings, legal and administrative action may be taken against those responsible for the incident. Meanwhile, the health of the students continues to improve, and medical experts have assured that there is no need for further concern.

This unfortunate event has highlighted the critical need for stringent checks and protocols when it comes to food safety, especially in educational institutions where large numbers of students depend on the food provided by the administration.

The medical team administered treatment immediately upon their arrival.
