Many expressed their frustration at the recurring issue of poor drainage systems, which fail to cope with intense rains during the monsoon season.

Hyderabad experienced heavy rainfall on Sunday evening, bringing life to a standstill in many parts of the city, particularly Secunderabad. The sudden downpour led to severe waterlogging in both residential and commercial areas, leaving commuters, shopkeepers and residents grappling with widespread inconvenience.

The rainfall, which began late in the evening, quickly inundated several low-lying stretches, including major roads and market areas. Key traffic junctions in Secunderabad witnessed slow-moving vehicles as cars, two-wheelers and buses struggled to pass through waterlogged roads. Many commuters were stranded in long traffic jams, while public transport services were delayed due to the flooded conditions.

Local residents reported that their homes and shops were affected by rainwater entering through drains that overflowed within minutes of the heavy downpour. Several colonies near Tarnaka, Malkajgiri, Marredpally and nearby localities faced ankle to knee-deep water. Many expressed their frustration at the recurring issue of poor drainage systems, which fail to cope with intense rains during the monsoon season.

Authorities from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other civic bodies were alerted soon after waterlogging was reported. Teams were deployed to clear blockages in stormwater drains and pump out excess water from the affected zones. Emergency workers also set up barricades at flooded underpasses and high-risk areas to prevent accidents. Despite these efforts, residents complained that the response was delayed and inadequate compared to the scale of waterlogging.

For many shopkeepers in Secunderabad, the rainfall resulted in financial losses, as goods and stock were damaged by the water entering their premises. Daily wage workers and small vendors also faced hardships, as the rain forced markets to close early, reducing their earnings for the day. Schoolchildren returning home in the evening were also stranded, with parents rushing to pick them up due to disruptions in bus services.

Experts have noted that the city’s rapid urbanization, coupled with insufficient drainage planning, continues to aggravate the situation during heavy rainfalls. Environmentalists have repeatedly stressed the need for restoring natural water bodies and improving urban infrastructure to handle excess rainwater effectively.

While rainfall provided relief from the rising temperatures, it also highlighted the need for stronger preventive measures. Local residents emphasized that desilting of drains and timely preparation before the monsoon could help reduce the recurring flooding in Secunderabad and other parts of Hyderabad.

The heavy downpour in Secunderabad once again underlined the challenges faced by rapidly growing cities like Hyderabad, where urban planning struggles to keep pace with climate variability. With the monsoon season expected to continue, authorities have assured residents of intensified efforts to strengthen drainage networks and improve disaster preparedness.
