The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has responded by deploying its monsoon emergency teams to clear choked drainage systems and remove fallen tree branches.

Hyderabad, June 13 – Sudden and intense rainfall struck several parts of Hyderabad earlier today, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic slowdowns, and inconvenience to residents across multiple localities. Areas such as Banjara Hills, Mehdipatnam, Begumpet, and Madhapur witnessed heavy downpours starting in the early hours, which continued for over two hours in some places.

The rainfall led to severe water stagnation in several low-lying areas, severely impacting vehicular movement. Office-goers and school children faced difficulties as major arterial roads were submerged under several inches of water. Traffic police were seen actively working to manage the congestion and guide vehicles through alternate routes.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has responded by deploying its monsoon emergency teams to clear choked drainage systems and remove fallen tree branches. A few vehicles were reported to have broken down due to water entering engines, particularly in the Khairatabad and Ameerpet regions.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the sudden rainfall was caused by a trough over Telangana and adjoining areas, leading to thunderstorm activity. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad and surrounding districts, warning of more rainfall over the next 48 hours, with occasional thunder and lightning.

GHMC officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and refrain from stepping out during peak rainfall hours. Citizens have also been asked to report incidents of waterlogging or tree falls via the GHMC app or helpline numbers. Special teams have been stationed in vulnerable zones to address flood-like situations on a priority basis.

Power supply in a few parts of the city, including Tolichowki and LB Nagar, was temporarily disrupted due to safety precautions taken by the electricity department. Restoration efforts are underway.

Environmental experts have pointed out that the recurring issue of waterlogging in Hyderabad is due to poor urban planning, concretisation, and encroachments on natural drainage paths. They stressed the need for long-term infrastructural changes to avoid similar situations during the peak monsoon season.

The Hyderabad Traffic Police have released advisories requesting commuters to use public transportation where possible and to follow updates through official traffic channels. Commuters have also been urged to avoid areas such as Panjagutta, Nampally, and Uppal during heavy rain hours due to ongoing water drainage works.

As the monsoon intensifies across the southern region of India, city authorities and citizens are being urged to remain alert, ensure safety measures are followed, and coordinate with civic bodies in times of emergency.

Commuters have also been urged to avoid areas such as Panjagutta, Nampally, and Uppal during heavy rain hours due to ongoing water drainage works.
