Residents have been urged to stay indoors during periods of intense rain and avoid venturing near overflowing streams and drains.

Khammam, Telangana:

Continuous heavy rain over the past two days has caused the Munneru River to overflow, resulting in waterlogging and partial flooding in several parts of Khammam district. The torrential downpour has disrupted normal life, affecting both urban and rural areas. Officials have issued advisories to residents living near riverbanks and low-lying zones to remain alert and take precautionary measures.

According to reports from the Telangana State Disaster Management Authority (TSDMA), the district recorded exceptionally high rainfall levels, leading to a rapid rise in the water level of the Munneru River. The overflow has inundated roads, agricultural fields, and residential colonies situated close to the river. Local authorities have deployed municipal and emergency response teams to drain stagnant water and ensure public safety.

Several key routes within Khammam town were submerged, causing severe traffic congestion. Vehicular movement on connecting roads towards Wyra, Madhira, and Kusumanchi was disrupted due to flooding. Commuters were advised to avoid unnecessary travel until water recedes. Power supply was temporarily suspended in certain localities as a safety measure.

District Collector and municipal officials conducted field inspections to assess the situation. Pumps and sandbags were arranged to prevent further waterlogging in critical areas. The authorities have also set up temporary relief centres to accommodate affected families, should the situation worsen.

Meanwhile, farmers in low-lying agricultural regions have reported crop damage due to the excessive rainfall. Paddy, cotton, and chilli fields in parts of Khammam and neighbouring districts were reportedly submerged. The Agriculture Department is expected to carry out a detailed damage assessment once the rain subsides.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall over the next 48 hours due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in parts of Khammam, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Nalgonda districts. Residents have been urged to stay indoors during periods of intense rain and avoid venturing near overflowing streams and drains.

Authorities have appealed to the public not to spread unverified information on social media regarding flood intensity. Helplines have been activated for emergency assistance, and continuous monitoring of the Munneru River’s flow is being maintained.

The Telangana State Disaster Response Force (TSDRF) and police personnel are on standby to assist with rescue and relief operations if the situation deteriorates. As the state braces for more rainfall, efforts are being made to minimize damage and ensure public safety across affected regions.
