A standoff between a group of Nihangs and the Uttarakhand administration at the Himachal Pradesh Uttarakhand border concluded peacefully in the early hours of Friday after discussions between representatives of the group and government officials. Following the negotiations, the Nihang group agreed to return to Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh under police escort.
The incident had created tension for several hours at the Kulhal checkpoint in the Vikasnagar area of Dehradun district. According to officials, members of the group had gathered near the state border while attempting to proceed toward Hemkund Sahib. Security personnel had established barricades at the checkpoint to regulate movement and maintain law and order.
Authorities stated that some members of the group attempted to move past the barricades, resulting in a confrontation with police personnel. The situation remained under close monitoring as additional security forces were deployed to prevent further escalation and ensure public safety.
Senior police officers and district administration officials initiated discussions with representatives of the Nihang group to resolve the issue peacefully. After several rounds of negotiations, both sides reached an understanding that allowed the situation to be defused without any major incident.
Following the agreement, the Nihang group returned to Paonta Sahib under police supervision. Officials confirmed that the movement was carried out in an orderly manner and that normal traffic and security arrangements at the border checkpoint were restored after the group departed.
The group also announced that it had withdrawn its proposed protest regarding the June 16 incident at Karnaprayag. The planned demonstration had been one of the reasons for the gathering at the state border. Officials welcomed the decision, stating that dialogue had helped avoid further disruption and ensured that the matter was resolved peacefully.
The Uttarakhand administration reiterated that maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of pilgrims traveling to religious destinations remain top priorities. Authorities also emphasized that any concerns or grievances should be addressed through lawful and peaceful channels.
Police officials stated that security measures would continue at sensitive border locations and pilgrimage routes as a precaution. They added that coordination between the administrations of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh would remain in place to ensure smooth movement of pilgrims and maintain peace in the region.
The situation has now returned to normal, and officials have confirmed that no further disturbances were reported following the conclusion of the negotiations.
