IMD Regional Director Habibur Rahaman Biswa explained that such formations over the Bay of Bengal during this time of year are not unusual, but their impact can vary depending on how the circulation develops.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory following the formation of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. The system, according to experts, is expected to influence weather conditions in several parts of West Bengal in the coming days. With the circulation developing strength, residents in South and North Bengal can expect rain accompanied by gusty winds. The advisory particularly highlights the vulnerability of fishermen, urging them to avoid entering the sea until conditions improve.

IMD Regional Director Habibur Rahaman Biswa explained that such formations over the Bay of Bengal during this time of year are not unusual, but their impact can vary depending on how the circulation develops. Currently, the system is expected to trigger moderate to heavy rainfall in districts along the coast and adjoining inland areas. Some districts in South Bengal, including Kolkata, Howrah, East Midnapore, and South 24 Parganas, are likely to receive significant showers. North Bengal too is forecast to experience rain, particularly in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar.

The forecast has raised concerns for those dependent on marine activities. Fishermen in coastal regions are at particular risk, as strong winds and rough seas are expected. Authorities have urged them to remain onshore until the advisory is lifted. Such warnings are common during the development of cyclonic circulations, as the Bay of Bengal has a history of quickly intensifying systems that can cause sudden and dangerous conditions at sea.

In addition to fishermen, residents in low-lying coastal areas are being cautioned about possible waterlogging due to heavy downpours. Municipal bodies in major towns have been asked to remain prepared for clearing drains and ensuring smooth water outflow to prevent flooding. Power disruptions and damage to roadside trees are also possible due to strong winds in certain areas.

Weather experts have pointed out that this circulation is part of the larger post-monsoon pattern, during which the Bay of Bengal remains a hotspot for cyclonic activity. While the current system is being closely monitored, authorities are prepared for rapid changes in intensity. People in affected districts are advised to stay updated with regular bulletins and follow the instructions of local administration.

The IMD continues to keep a close watch on the system’s progress. Depending on its trajectory and strength, the rainfall pattern may expand further inland, affecting agricultural activities in central Bengal. While rain may bring relief from rising temperatures, heavy showers could delay harvesting in certain regions.

In the meantime, preparedness remains the key. Disaster management teams are on alert in vulnerable districts, and communication networks are being reinforced to ensure quick response in case of emergencies. The advisory serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and the importance of caution during such developments.
