Gangasagar 2025: Early Devotees Surge as Holy Dip Nears
The sacred Gangasagar Mela in West Bengal has recorded an early turnout of around 25 lakh devotees before the commencement of the auspicious dip, scheduled to start at 6:58 AM on January 14 and continue for 24 hours. Gangasagar Mela officially began on January 10, with pilgrims arriving in large numbers to take part in the rituals.
Record Turnout Expected
State minister Bankim Hazra reported, “Nearly 25 lakh people have already visited Gangasagar. We expect a turnout of 75–80 lakh coinciding with the holy dip on January 14-15. Last year, the turnout during the same period was over 1 crore. Due to the Maha Kumbh, many devotees have arrived early this year.”
Early Arrivals Linked to Maha Kumbh
Pilgrims, some arriving as early as December 25, have chosen to complete their holy dip at Gangasagar before proceeding to the Maha Kumbh. This dual pilgrimage is common among devotees seeking blessings at multiple sacred sites during this auspicious period.
Enhanced Security Measures
The administration has implemented robust preparations, ensuring safety across land and water routes. A special bike patrol squad equipped with modern weapons has been deployed to maintain order. Comprising 45 bikes with two specially trained personnel on each, this squad will patrol the area and is authorized to take action when necessary.
A Spiritual and Logistical Success
With state officials working tirelessly to manage the growing crowd, the event is poised to be a success both spiritually and logistically. Authorities have expressed confidence in handling the expected surge in pilgrims, with adequate resources and personnel in place.
