India's health management agencies and medical professionals are closely monitoring the spread of a new strain of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, amid reports of hospitals there struggling to handle increased patient loads. There has been speculation about a possible rise in cases of respiratory infections, raising fears of a Covid-like situation.
However, Atul Goel, the Director-General of Health Services, reassured the public that there was no need to panic. He explained that HMPV is a common respiratory virus that primarily causes mild cold symptoms, and in some cases, flu-like symptoms, particularly in the elderly and infants. "HMPV is not something serious or worrisome. Respiratory infections tend to rise during the winter months, but we are prepared to manage any increase in cases," Goel said.
He further added that hospitals across India are equipped with sufficient beds, oxygen supplies, and resources to manage an uptick in respiratory illnesses, and so far, no significant rise in cases has been reported.
Bengal's health department has also confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation and are in contact with the central health ministry for any necessary guidelines or countermeasures. A senior health official from the state stated, "While there is no immediate cause for concern, we remain vigilant and are prepared to act if needed."
Doctors in Kolkata have confirmed that HMPV is generally a harmless virus, and city hospitals have treated numerous patients with respiratory infections this winter without significant issues. The National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) is continuing to track trends in seasonal influenza and respiratory infections to ensure public safety.
