In a significant shift in Bengal's potato market, prices have plummeted, with the popular Jyoti variety now available at Rs32 per kilogram in retail markets.

In a significant shift in Bengal's potato market, prices have plummeted, with the popular Jyoti variety now available at Rs32 per kilogram in retail markets. This sudden drop in prices is primarily due to the influx of fresh crops from Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, combined with traders clearing out their cold storage stock to make room for the new harvest.

The fresh arrivals from Punjab's Jalandhar and Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad and Unna have led to a dramatic shift in consumer preferences, with many buyers now opting for the newly harvested potatoes rather than older, cold-stored stocks. This has put pressure on traders who are rushing to offload their inventory before it becomes unsellable.

According to market insiders, cold storages in Bengal still hold an estimated 4.5 lakh tonnes of potatoes. If the remaining stock is not sold in the coming days, traders face the risk of significant financial losses. Wholesale prices for Jyoti potatoes have already dropped to Rs24-25 per kilogram as shipments of fresh potatoes flood Kolkata's markets.

The new stock from neighboring states is being sold at around Rs1,100 per 50-kg sack, contributing to the price drop. Lalu Mukherjee, president of Paschimbanga Pragatishil Alu Byabsayee Samiti, expressed concern over the potential losses faced by traders, especially if the government does not allow inter-state sales to continue. “If inter-state sales are restricted, traders here could face heavy losses,” he warned.

The current market conditions highlight the volatility in the agricultural supply chain, with prices fluctuating based on seasonal harvests and regional supply dynamics. Bengal, which typically relies on its own potato production, is now seeing an influx of potatoes from other states, significantly affecting local pricing and trade.

As the cold storage stocks are cleared and fresh crops continue to enter the market, it remains to be seen how the price of potatoes will stabilize in the coming weeks. Traders and consumers alike are keeping a close eye on the situation, as the surplus could lead to further price adjustments in the retail market.
