West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed to junior doctors who have been on a hunger strike, urging them to call off their protest and give her government 3-4 months to address their demands. The junior doctors have been fasting to protest against issues such as low salaries, insufficient working conditions, and a shortage of medical staff, which they claim has worsened over time.
During a press interaction, Mamata Banerjee acknowledged the concerns raised by the medical community and promised that her government was actively working on solutions. She appealed for patience, asking the doctors to consider the broader challenges the healthcare sector is facing, particularly post-pandemic. "Give me 3-4 months. I assure you that your demands are being reviewed, and we will take necessary actions. Please, don't make things worse by escalating this strike further. Let us handle this with understanding and cooperation," Banerjee said.
She also emphasized that while their demands are justified, resolving these issues will take time due to the complexity of the healthcare system and the financial constraints of the state. Banerjee urged the doctors to resume their duties, stressing that patient care must not be compromised, especially at a time when healthcare infrastructure is already under strain.
The junior doctors, who have been fasting unto death, are demanding an immediate solution to their concerns, with some of them already facing deteriorating health conditions. While the state government has offered assurances, the medical community has been pushing for written commitments and swift action to improve working conditions and resolve salary-related issues.
Banerjee’s call for an end to the hunger strike comes at a critical time, as any prolonged disruption in medical services could have severe consequences for the state's healthcare delivery, particularly in government-run hospitals that serve a large portion of the population. The junior doctors, however, remain firm on their stance and are discussing the next course of action following the Chief Minister’s appeal. Whether they will accept her request and call off the strike remains to be seen.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made an earnest appeal to junior doctors, urging them to end their hunger strike that has been ongoing over demands related to workplace conditions and pay. During a public address, Banerjee requested the doctors to show patience and give her administration 3-4 months to address their concerns.
