In a remarkable display of faith and devotion, around 1,800 devotees of Lord Ayyappa participated in the traditional Aazhi Kundam fire-walking ritual in Karur district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. The ritual was organised as part of an annual temple festival and drew large crowds from nearby villages and towns. Devotees walked barefoot across a pit filled with burning embers after completing special prayers and observing strict religious practices.

The Aazhi Kundam ritual is considered a sacred act of devotion in many parts of Tamil Nadu. Participants usually undertake fasting, abstinence, and daily prayers for several days or weeks before taking part in the fire-walking ceremony. Devotees believe that walking across the embers with pure faith helps fulfil their vows and brings divine blessings.

Preparations for the ritual began early in the morning. The fire pit was carefully prepared under the supervision of temple priests and organisers. After the embers reached the required temperature, special poojas were performed. The devotees then walked one by one across the glowing embers while chanting the name of Lord Ayyappa. Many participants included first-time devotees as well as those who have been performing the ritual for several years.

Temple authorities said elaborate arrangements were made to ensure the safety of the participants. Fire and rescue personnel, health department staff, and volunteers were stationed at the venue. Temporary medical camps were set up to provide immediate treatment in case of burns or exhaustion. Police were deployed to regulate the crowd and manage traffic in the surrounding areas.

Officials confirmed that the ritual was conducted peacefully and without any major incidents. A few devotees were treated for minor burn injuries and dehydration at the medical camp, but no serious injuries were reported. After completing the fire-walking ritual, devotees offered special prayers inside the temple and received holy offerings from the priests.

Local residents and shopkeepers also actively participated in the festival by setting up food and refreshment stalls for the devotees. The festival created a festive atmosphere in and around Karur, with traditional music, devotional songs, and cultural programmes being organised alongside the main ritual.

District administration officials said permissions for the event were granted after ensuring that all safety guidelines were followed. They added that such traditional practices are part of the region’s cultural heritage, but strict monitoring is necessary to prevent accidents and maintain public order.

The Aazhi Kundam ritual has been performed for generations in several parts of Tamil Nadu, especially during temple festivals dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. It symbolises the victory of faith over fear and is believed to test the physical and mental strength of devotees.

The Karur fire-walking event once again highlighted the deep-rooted spiritual traditions of Tamil Nadu and the strong belief system followed by devotees. As the ritual concluded, devotees expressed gratitude for being able to complete their vows safely and prayed for peace, prosperity, and good health for their families.
