Govinda!” echoing through the temple corridors and the aroma of incense filling the air, the event was a moving spiritual experience for the faithful.

In a vibrant celebration of devotion and tradition, thousands of devotees gathered at the Parimala Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Mayiladuthurai to observe the auspicious Panguni Uthiram Unchal Utsavam. This significant event, held during the Tamil month of Panguni, marks a spiritual highlight in the temple calendar and attracts worshippers from various parts of Tamil Nadu and beyond.

The day began with early morning rituals and abhishekams (sacred bath) to the presiding deity, Lord Ranganatha, followed by the decoration of the deity in colorful silk attire and floral garlands. The highlight of the celebrations was the Unchal (swing) ceremony, where the deity was placed on a beautifully adorned swing inside the temple premises, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of temple instruments and devotional hymns.

Panguni Uthiram is revered in Tamil tradition as it commemorates several divine marriages, including those of Lord Shiva and Parvati, Lord Murugan and Deivanai, and Lord Ranganatha with Goddess Ranganayaki. It is believed that attending the rituals on this day brings blessings for harmony, marriage, and prosperity.

The temple, known for its Dravidian architecture and historical significance, was lit up and decorated with traditional lamps, banana leaves, and kolams (rangoli). Local residents and temple authorities had made elaborate arrangements to manage the crowd and ensure smooth conduct of the festivities. Volunteers and police personnel were stationed at key points to guide the devotees and maintain order.

Many devotees undertook padayatra (pilgrimage by foot) from nearby towns, reflecting the deep-rooted faith associated with this event. Stalls offering prasadam, water, and first-aid were set up to serve the visiting pilgrims.

The Panguni Uthiram festival at the Parimala Ranganatha Temple not only reflects the spiritual fervor of the region but also showcases the cultural richness of Tamil Nadu’s temple traditions. With the chants of “Govinda! Govinda!” echoing through the temple corridors and the aroma of incense filling the air, the event was a moving spiritual experience for the faithful.

Temple authorities stated that the celebrations will continue with Vasantha Utsavam and other upcoming rituals over the next few days. Special buses and transportation facilities were also arranged to accommodate the increased footfall during the festival period.
