Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday released a commemorative coin and a special postal stamp to mark the 550th anniversary of Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt at a grand event held in South Goa. The programme was part of the year-long celebrations being observed by the historic mutt, which has played a significant role in the spiritual, educational, and social life of the region for over five centuries.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that institutions like Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt represent the deep-rooted spiritual traditions of India and continue to guide society even in modern times. He highlighted that the mutt has worked consistently in the fields of education, social service, and preservation of Indian values. The Prime Minister also noted that the release of the commemorative coin and special stamp symbolised national recognition of the mutt’s contributions to the country.
The commemorative coin and stamp were officially unveiled in the presence of senior monks, trustees of the mutt, Goa Chief Minister and other dignitaries. The coin features inscriptions related to the 550-year milestone, while the stamp captures the spiritual heritage associated with the mutt. These items will serve as lasting collectibles reflecting the institution’s legacy and its influence on successive generations.
During his speech, Prime Minister Modi spoke about the importance of connecting India’s ancient traditions with contemporary development. He said that spiritual institutions have always played a vital role in shaping society by promoting values such as service, discipline, unity, and compassion. He added that the country’s strength lies in its cultural diversity and the harmonious coexistence of multiple traditions.
The Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt, located in South Goa, is one of the prominent spiritual centres in the region. It follows the Dwaita philosophy and has remained active in religious activities, community welfare, and education for several centuries. The mutt has also contributed to preserving traditional practices, scriptures, and rituals while adapting to changing times.
The 550th year celebrations include a series of religious discourses, cultural programmes, social initiatives, and public outreach activities. Devotees from across Goa and neighbouring states have been participating in the events. The organisers stated that the celebrations aim to spread the message of unity, service, and moral values among society.
Prime Minister Modi also praised Goa for maintaining its unique cultural identity while progressing on the path of development. He said that celebrations such as these help reinforce the cultural foundations of the nation and inspire younger generations to take pride in India’s heritage.
The release of the commemorative coin and special stamp is expected to further popularise the history and significance of Shree Samsthan Gokarn Jeevottam Mutt at the national level. The event concluded with traditional prayers and cultural performances, reflecting the spiritual atmosphere of the occasion.
