In a heartfelt display of sorrow and faith, members of the Christian community in Raipur gathered at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Byron Bazar to hold special prayers following the demise of Pope Francis. The cathedral, one of the oldest and most prominent churches in Chhattisgarh, witnessed a solemn and emotional prayer service attended by hundreds of devotees.

The atmosphere inside the church was quiet and reverent as parishioners lit candles and offered floral tributes. The service began with the ringing of the church bell, followed by a reading from the Holy Scriptures. Church leaders delivered messages of remembrance, highlighting Pope Francis's humility, simplicity, and global work toward peace, interfaith dialogue, and social justice.

Reverend Father Anthony, who led the prayer, said, “Pope Francis was not only the head of the Catholic Church but also a beacon of hope and unity for millions around the world. His efforts to bring people of different faiths together, his concern for the poor, and his message of environmental responsibility will be remembered for generations.”

Throughout the service, hymns and songs of mourning were sung by the church choir, and a moment of silence was observed. Children and youth from the church also participated by reading passages from the Bible and lighting candles in memory of the Pope. Many in attendance, especially elderly worshippers, were visibly emotional, reflecting on the Pope’s decade-long influence.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, made history as the first Latin American pope and the first Jesuit to hold the position. His papacy, beginning in 2013, focused on inclusivity, compassion for the marginalized, and bold reforms within the Church. His sudden demise has sent waves of mourning across the global Christian community, with similar prayer services being held in various parts of India.

Local Christian leaders also expressed gratitude to the state authorities for their support in ensuring the smooth conduct of the prayer gathering. Security arrangements were in place, and local residents, irrespective of religion, visited the cathedral to express condolences, showcasing the spirit of unity in diversity.

The prayer service concluded with a final blessing for the departed soul and a call to carry forward Pope Francis’s teachings of love, humility, and service. As people slowly left the cathedral, the message was clear—while the world has lost a spiritual guide, his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of millions.
