Erode, Tamil Nadu, April 11: The sacred hill temple of Chennimalai Murugan in Tamil Nadu's Erode district witnessed a massive turnout of devotees on the auspicious occasion of Panguni Uthiram, a significant festival in the Tamil Hindu calendar. Thousands of worshippers from nearby towns and villages gathered to celebrate the divine event, which marks the celestial wedding of Lord Murugan and Deivanai.
Panguni Uthiram, observed on the full moon day of the Tamil month Panguni, is associated with sacred weddings in Hindu mythology, including that of Lord Shiva and Parvati, and Lord Murugan and Deivanai. It is considered highly auspicious for marital harmony and spiritual upliftment.
Special rituals began early in the morning with abhishekam (holy bath) to the deity, followed by alankaram (decoration) and deeparadhanai (ritual worship with lamps). The temple premises resonated with chants and devotional music as devotees queued up for darshan, some carrying offerings and performing kavadi—a traditional form of penance in honor of Lord Murugan.
The highlight of the day was the procession of the deities around the hill temple, where idols were beautifully decorated and taken in a grand chariot around the temple’s outer path. Pilgrims walked barefoot, chanting praises of Lord Murugan, while musicians played traditional instruments, creating a vibrant and spiritual atmosphere.
Local authorities and temple administration had made extensive arrangements for the smooth conduct of the festival. Temporary shelters, drinking water stations, medical aid, and crowd management personnel were deployed to ensure the safety and comfort of the devotees. Police were stationed at key points to regulate the heavy footfall and traffic around the temple.
Vendors and food stalls lined the approach roads, adding to the festive spirit, while volunteers helped guide visitors through the temple complex. Cultural programs and spiritual discourses were also organized as part of the day’s celebrations.
Temple officials expressed gratitude for the successful conduct of the festival and noted that Panguni Uthiram continues to grow in popularity each year, drawing pilgrims not only from Erode district but also from other parts of Tamil Nadu and neighboring states.
The Chennimalai Murugan Temple, perched atop a hill and known for its scenic beauty and spiritual significance, remains one of the prominent Murugan shrines in South India. Festivals like Panguni Uthiram reinforce its legacy as a powerful devotional center dedicated to the Tamil god of war and wisdom.
