Thousands of devotees and visitors gathered at Chakrapalli near Ayyampettai in Thanjavur district to witness the Bommai Poo Podum rituals, a key highlight of the renowned Sapta Sthanam festival. Celebrated with grandeur and deep cultural significance, this annual event draws crowds from across Tamil Nadu and beyond.

The Sapta Sthanam festival is a centuries-old tradition wherein deities from seven temples—Thiruvaiyaru, Thirupazhanam, Thiruchotruthurai, Thiruvedhikudi, Thirukandiyur, Thirupoonthuruthi, and Chakrapalli—are brought together in a symbolic spiritual procession. Each temple’s deity arrives in ornately decorated chariots and is welcomed at the main temple with ceremonial honors.

The Bommai Poo Podum ritual, in particular, is a visually captivating part of the festival. It involves the offering of floral tributes to sacred wooden dolls (bommais) that represent various deities and celestial beings. The ritual symbolizes the unity of divine forces and is accompanied by devotional music, nadaswaram, and the rhythmic beat of traditional drums.

Devotees lined the streets and temple premises to catch a glimpse of the deities arriving in procession. The atmosphere was vibrant with the sounds of chants, conch shells, and temple bells. Volunteers, local authorities, and temple staff coordinated efficiently to manage the large crowds, ensuring the event remained smooth and spiritually fulfilling.

Cultural programs, including classical music and dance performances, added to the festive mood, drawing art enthusiasts as well. The local markets buzzed with activity as vendors sold flowers, sweets, and devotional items, enhancing the celebratory spirit.

Local residents believe that participating in this ritual brings blessings, family harmony, and spiritual fulfillment. Elders in the community narrated stories of how the tradition has been preserved and passed down over generations, maintaining the cultural legacy of the region.

Authorities had made arrangements for drinking water, medical aid, and transportation. Special buses were operated from major towns to Chakrapalli to accommodate the heavy influx of devotees.

The Sapta Sthanam and Bommai Poo Podum festival continues to be a shining example of Tamil Nadu’s spiritual and cultural vibrancy. As the deities departed after the rituals, devotees left with a sense of divine fulfillment and pride in their cultural heritage.
