India provides all of that in abundance.” India’s Ministry of Tourism has also played a role in this growth by promoting regional circuits, cultural festivals, and digital campaigns aimed at European markets.

Agoda, one of Asia’s leading digital travel platforms, has released its 2025 travel trends report, revealing a significant shift in European tourist preferences toward Asian destinations. The report showcases a surge in interest for countries such as Thailand, India, Vietnam, and Japan, with India showing particularly notable growth as a preferred destination for European travelers.

Historically, Southeast Asia has been a stronghold for European backpackers and holidaymakers, drawn by its affordability, natural beauty, and cultural diversity. However, Agoda’s latest data indicates that India is rapidly climbing the charts, competing with long-time favorites like Thailand and Bali.

Agoda’s analysis is based on search and booking data from millions of users across Europe. In 2025, European bookings to India saw a 28% year-on-year increase, driven by factors such as easier visa processes, increased international flight connectivity, and heightened interest in India’s wellness and cultural tourism sectors.

Top Indian destinations gaining traction include Goa, Jaipur, Rishikesh, Varanasi, Kochi, and Udaipur. These cities represent a mix of spirituality, heritage, nature, and modern comfort—qualities that European travelers are increasingly seeking. Wellness tourism, including yoga retreats and Ayurvedic experiences, also saw a notable rise, especially among tourists from Germany, France, and the UK.

According to Omri Morgenstern, CEO of Agoda, “European travelers are looking beyond traditional beach holidays. They are more interested in immersive experiences—learning about history, local lifestyles, cuisine, and spirituality. India provides all of that in abundance.”

India’s Ministry of Tourism has also played a role in this growth by promoting regional circuits, cultural festivals, and digital campaigns aimed at European markets. Several Indian states have enhanced their tourism infrastructure and services, making them more accessible and tourist-friendly. The 'Dekho Apna Desh' campaign and improved digital booking systems through platforms like Agoda have made India more approachable and reliable for foreign visitors.

Interestingly, Agoda’s report also suggests that sustainability is becoming a key factor for European tourists. Many are actively looking for eco-friendly stays, low-impact travel options, and community-based experiences—areas where India has begun to make strides, particularly in regions like Kerala and Himachal Pradesh.

While Thailand remains the number one destination in Asia due to its consistent tourism development, India’s rise is significant and expected to continue as more European travelers look for value-rich, experience-driven travel. With a vast cultural landscape, varied geography, and an expanding hospitality industry, India is well-positioned to become a top contender in Asia’s competitive tourism sector.

Agoda recommends that travel businesses in India invest further in language services, guided experiences, and sustainability programs to maintain and grow this momentum.

As 2025 unfolds, India appears poised not only to welcome more European tourists but also to reshape the global narrative around travel in Asia—from spiritual journeys to luxury and eco-conscious tourism.

The 'Dekho Apna Desh' campaign and improved digital booking systems through platforms like Agoda have made India more approachable and reliable for foreign visitors.
