Airfares to Srinagar Drop Sharply Following Pahalgam Terror Attack: Travel Trends Shift

Airfare Slashed as Demand Falls Airfares from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad to Srinagar have seen a sudden drop.

The recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, has had a visible and immediate impact on the region's tourism sector. Among the most noticeable effects is the steep decline in flight fares to Srinagar, with prices dropping by nearly 50 percent across several airlines. This development comes amid growing safety concerns among domestic tourists, especially during what is typically considered the peak travel season in the Kashmir Valley.

Airfare Slashed as Demand Falls

Airfares from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad to Srinagar have seen a sudden drop. Travel portals and booking platforms are reporting tickets available for less than half of their usual seasonal price. Airlines, reacting to the dwindling demand, are reducing prices to attract bookings, though the number of cancellations is reportedly rising.

Normally, summer attracts thousands of tourists to Kashmir for its scenic beauty, pleasant climate, and holiday experiences. But this year, the Pahalgam attack, which claimed lives and reignited fears about regional stability, has deterred potential visitors.

Tourism Industry Hit Hard

Kashmir's economy is heavily reliant on tourism, particularly during the summer months. Local businesses including hotels, guesthouses, houseboat operators, taxi services, and tourist guides are already reporting sharp declines in bookings. Tour operators have seen a wave of cancellations, with many travellers shifting their plans to alternative destinations in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, or the Northeast.

Hotel occupancy in popular areas such as Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg has dipped considerably. Industry experts believe it will take sustained assurance and promotional campaigns to restore confidence in Kashmir as a safe tourist destination.

Authorities Urge Caution, Assure Security

Jammu and Kashmir authorities have stepped up security measures across all major tourist locations. The administration is actively coordinating with tourism stakeholders to minimize the economic damage and ensure visitor safety. Additional security personnel have been deployed in high-footfall zones, and tourist movement is being monitored carefully.

Officials also urge the public to verify information from credible sources and not fall prey to misinformation that could further damage Kashmir’s fragile tourism ecosystem.

A Temporary Setback or Long-Term Concern?

While similar patterns have been observed in the past—where tourism dips following an attack and slowly revives—experts remain uncertain about how soon recovery can begin this time. The competitive airfares may benefit some last-minute travellers, but larger group tours and premium bookings, which form a significant chunk of the industry’s revenue, have taken a hit.

If the security situation stabilizes and no further incidents occur, the region could still salvage the latter half of the season. However, trust and perception will play a crucial role in determining how quickly Kashmir’s tourism sector bounces back

Industry experts believe it will take sustained assurance and promotional campaigns to restore confidence in Kashmir as a safe tourist destination.
