The long-anticipated Yellow Line of the Bengaluru Metro is scheduled to be inaugurated this month, marking a major step in the city’s ongoing public transportation expansion. Officially known as the RV Road–Bommasandra corridor, the new line is part of the Namma Metro Phase 2 project and aims to provide enhanced connectivity to Bengaluru’s southern and southeastern zones.
Covering a distance of approximately 19 kilometers, the Yellow Line includes 16 stations connecting key areas such as Ragigudda, Jayadeva Hospital, Silk Board Junction, Electronic City, and Bommasandra. This stretch is expected to serve as a crucial transit route for daily commuters working in the city’s major IT and industrial hubs, especially around Electronic City and Bommasandra Industrial Area.
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has conducted successful trial runs over the past few weeks, testing various aspects of the system, including train control, signal integration, and emergency procedures. Officials have reported satisfactory performance in all critical parameters, clearing the way for safety approvals and a formal launch in June.
The launch of the Yellow Line is expected to provide significant relief to Bengaluru's notoriously congested roads. Commuters traveling between southern Bengaluru and the Outer Ring Road area will benefit from shorter travel times and reduced dependency on road-based transport. BMRCL estimates that the new line will handle over 1.5 lakh passengers daily in its initial phase, with the capacity to expand based on demand.
In addition to improving commute times, the Yellow Line has been designed with an emphasis on modern amenities and safety. Each station is equipped with elevators, escalators, CCTV surveillance, and facilities to assist differently-abled passengers. The line is also integrated with other metro lines at the Jayadeva Interchange, allowing seamless transfers to the Pink Line and further enhancing overall network connectivity.
Authorities have also focused on transit-oriented development, with provisions for feeder bus services and last-mile connectivity around major stations. This is intended to ensure that commuters can easily access residential and commercial areas without facing additional transportation challenges.
The metro project has not been without delays. Originally slated for completion in 2023, the Yellow Line faced multiple setbacks due to land acquisition hurdles and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with the final stages of testing and safety certification now underway, the project is on track to open for public use in June 2025.
Karnataka’s Chief Minister and senior officials from BMRCL are expected to attend the official inauguration ceremony, which will be announced shortly. With the city’s population and vehicle numbers rising rapidly, the addition of the Yellow Line is being hailed as a vital infrastructure upgrade for Bengaluru.
Once operational, the Yellow Line will not only ease traffic pressure but also contribute to reducing the city's carbon footprint by promoting the use of public transport. This milestone adds further momentum to the city's vision of building a robust and sustainable metro network across Bengaluru.
