The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the launch of the FASTag Annual Pass, which will be available from tomorrow. This new facility is designed to benefit frequent travellers on India’s national highways by offering unlimited toll access for a fixed annual fee, thereby reducing the need for repeated recharges and cash payments.
The FASTag system, which uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for automatic toll deduction, has already become mandatory for most vehicles in the country. By introducing the annual pass, NHAI aims to further streamline the toll collection process and encourage more drivers to switch to digital payment methods.
Price and Eligibility
While the exact price of the FASTag Annual Pass will vary depending on the class and type of vehicle, it is expected to be structured to provide significant savings for regular highway commuters. The facility will be available to both private and commercial vehicle owners who already have an active FASTag account linked to their bank or payment wallet.
Eligibility criteria include having a valid vehicle registration certificate, a functioning FASTag device installed on the windshield, and no pending toll payment disputes. Commercial vehicle operators who travel long distances on a regular basis are expected to be among the biggest beneficiaries of this scheme.
Application Process
Applicants will be able to purchase the annual pass online through the official NHAI FASTag portal or authorised partner banks. The process will involve logging into the FASTag account, selecting the ‘Annual Pass’ option, making the payment, and receiving confirmation via SMS and email. Once activated, the pass will be valid for a full year from the date of purchase, offering unlimited access on specified highway routes.
Benefits for Commuters
The primary advantage of the FASTag Annual Pass is convenience. Frequent travellers will no longer need to worry about topping up their accounts before long trips. The move is also expected to significantly cut waiting times at toll plazas, as vehicles with the pass can move through dedicated FASTag lanes without delay.
