The Bharatiya Janata Party has selected former Indian Administrative Service officer Devashish Sharma as its candidate for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam. The by-election is scheduled to be held on October 6, with the constituency emerging as an important political contest in the state.
Sharma recently served as the Deputy Commissioner of Nagaon district. He took voluntary retirement from government service on September 3 after the government accepted his request. A few days later, on September 8, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. The BJP subsequently announced him as its candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat.
The decision marks a quick transition for Sharma from administrative service to electoral politics. His recent experience as Nagaon district commissioner is expected to be a significant part of the BJP's campaign strategy in the constituency.
According to reports, Sharma belongs to the 2011 Assam Meghalaya cadre of the IAS and was posted as Nagaon district commissioner in June 2025. Before serving in Nagaon, he had also worked as the Deputy Commissioner of neighbouring Morigaon district. Both districts are part of the wider Nagaon parliamentary constituency.
Sharma has also served as Deputy Resident Commissioner at Assam Bhawan in Mumbai. During that period, reports said he assisted people from Assam who travelled to Mumbai for medical treatment, including patients seeking treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital. His administrative experience and public engagement are expected to feature prominently in the BJP's campaign.
The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat became vacant after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from Parliament. Bordoloi subsequently joined the BJP and contested the Assam Assembly election from the Dispur constituency, creating the need for a fresh election in Nagaon.
The Nagaon constituency has traditionally been an important electoral battleground in Assam. The upcoming by-election is therefore being closely watched by political parties because of its political significance and the changing alignments in the state.
The BJP's decision to nominate a former senior bureaucrat comes as the party seeks to strengthen its position in the constituency.
