Karnataka witnessed fresh political tensions on Friday as BJP leaders and legislators marched towards Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, demanding the resignation of Minister B Nagendra. The protest was linked to allegations surrounding the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation and the alleged diversion of funds meant for the welfare and development of Scheduled Tribes.
The BJP has been consistently raising the Valmiki Corporation issue during the Karnataka legislature's monsoon session. Opposition leaders have demanded that Nagendra be removed from the Cabinet, arguing that the allegations surrounding the case require greater political accountability and a transparent investigation.
The latest protest began with BJP leaders marching from the Valmiki statue towards Vidhana Soudha. The demonstration was aimed at putting pressure on the state government to act against Nagendra and address the opposition's allegations regarding the corporation's funds.
The controversy relates to alleged financial irregularities involving the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. Earlier investigations into the case found that approximately Rs 187 crore had been deposited into the corporation's bank account, while a substantial portion of the money was allegedly diverted through fraudulent transactions. The Central Bureau of Investigation later filed a chargesheet in the case.
According to the CBI chargesheet, around Rs 89.63 crore was allegedly diverted through forged cheques and RTGS transactions. Investigators said the diverted funds were subsequently moved through numerous bank accounts. The investigation has also examined the alleged involvement of several individuals connected with the corporation and financial transactions.
The BJP has repeatedly cited the alleged diversion of funds while demanding action against Nagendra. The opposition has argued that money allocated for the development and welfare of Scheduled Tribes should have been protected and used for its intended purpose.
The political controversy is not new. Nagendra had previously resigned from the Karnataka Cabinet in June 2024 after allegations connected with the Valmiki Corporation case emerged. At the time, the alleged unauthorised transfer of approximately Rs 187 crore became a major political issue, with the BJP demanding his resignation and an independent investigation.
Nagendra has now returned to the political spotlight after being included in the Karnataka Cabinet. His reappointment has triggered renewed criticism from the BJP, which argues that a minister facing allegations linked to the case should not continue in the government. The BJP has warned that it will continue its protests unless action is taken against him.
Nagendra, however, has rejected the political allegations against him. In his response to the BJP's campaign, he accused the opposition of targeting him because he belongs to a tribal community. He argued that the issue was being used politically rather than being discussed through the appropriate legislative and legal processes.
The minister has also questioned the BJP's criticism by pointing to cases and allegations involving leaders from the opposition and asking why similar standards should not be applied across political parties. His response has added another dimension to the ongoing political confrontation.
The Karnataka government has maintained that Nagendra's earlier resignation was intended to facilitate a transparent investigation into the allegations. The government has also pointed to the recovery of a portion of the funds involved in the case.
The matter has continued to generate political confrontation inside the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. BJP and JD(S) members have disrupted proceedings on multiple occasions while demanding Nagendra's removal. On August 19, opposition members again stalled Assembly proceedings over the demand for his resignation.
The opposition's campaign has also expanded beyond the Assembly. BJP units in different parts of Karnataka have organised demonstrations demanding that Nagendra be removed from the Cabinet. The party has argued that the minister's continuation in government undermines public confidence while the investigation and legal proceedings continue.
BJP leaders have described the alleged financial irregularities as a serious matter because the corporation was established to support the economic and social development of Scheduled Tribes. They have therefore demanded accountability from both officials and political leaders associated with the corporation.
The case has involved investigations by multiple agencies. Earlier reports said that the State Investigation Team, Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate were involved in examining different aspects of the alleged financial irregularities.
The CBI's subsequent chargesheet has added further details to the investigation. According to the agency, forged documents and banking credentials were allegedly used to facilitate fraudulent transactions. The investigation also examined how the diverted funds were subsequently moved through multiple accounts.
The political debate has consequently moved beyond the question of Nagendra's resignation and into wider questions of financial oversight, accountability and the protection of welfare funds.
For the BJP, the issue has become a major point of attack against the Congress-led Karnataka government. The opposition argues that the government must demonstrate that allegations involving public funds are being handled without political interference.
For the Congress and Nagendra, the position is that the allegations should be determined through the ongoing legal process and that political accusations should not be treated as established facts before the courts or investigating agencies reach conclusions.
The latest march to Vidhana Soudha therefore reflects the continuing political battle over the Valmiki Corporation case. With the opposition demanding Nagendra's resignation and the minister rejecting the allegations, the issue is likely to remain a major subject of debate in Karnataka politics.
The immediate focus will be on the government's response to the BJP's latest protest and on the progress of the investigations and court proceedings connected with the alleged financial irregularities.
It is important to distinguish between allegations made by political parties and findings established through investigation or judicial proceedings. While the BJP has accused Nagendra of responsibility and demanded his resignation, Nagendra has denied wrongdoing and described the campaign against him as politically motivated.
The controversy highlights the importance of transparent investigations when public welfare funds are allegedly misused. The final responsibility of individuals involved in the alleged financial transactions will depend on evidence presented during the legal process.
As the political confrontation continues, BJP leaders are expected to maintain pressure on the Karnataka government, while the ruling side is likely to defend its position and emphasise the ongoing investigation. The issue could remain a prominent topic during the current legislative session and in the broader political debate in Karnataka.
