AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has said that his party is open to an alliance with political parties that share the objective of preventing the BJP from returning to power in Uttar Pradesh for a third consecutive term. His remarks came during a public meeting in Kanpur as political parties begin preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Addressing the gathering in Kanpur’s Cantonment constituency, Owaisi said that parties seeking to challenge the BJP could approach the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen for discussions. He said AIMIM was prepared to work with parties that share this objective.
Owaisi also said that AIMIM would wait until October 2 before announcing its decision on a possible alliance. According to his statement, if an agreement is reached with other political parties, the alliance partners would be announced after that date and the parties would contest the Uttar Pradesh election together.
The announcement has brought renewed attention to the possibility of an opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. However, as of September 21, no final alliance involving AIMIM had been announced.
Owaisi said AIMIM would continue strengthening its organisational presence in Uttar Pradesh regardless of whether an alliance is finalised. The party has been conducting public meetings and organisational activities in different parts of the state as part of its preparations for the upcoming election.
The AIMIM leader also appealed to voters to strengthen the party’s presence in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. He said the community needed political representation and a voice in the state legislature. These remarks formed part of his broader argument for increasing AIMIM’s electoral presence in Uttar Pradesh.
During his Kanpur address, Owaisi also referred to the party’s experience during the Bihar Assembly elections. He said AIMIM had approached several opposition parties seeking an alliance and had proposed contesting six seats as part of an arrangement. According to Owaisi, that proposal was not accepted.
He indicated that the Uttar Pradesh situation should be handled differently and invited parties interested in an alliance to hold discussions with AIMIM. His comments suggest that the party is keeping the possibility of an alliance open while continuing its independent organisational work in the state.
Owaisi also criticised previous governments in Uttar Pradesh over issues relating to the socio-economic and educational conditions of Muslims. He referred to political representation, education and development while addressing the gathering.
He questioned the record of previous administrations and raised issues concerning the representation of Muslims in state politics. His comments included criticism of the Samajwadi Party and the BJP over their respective approaches to issues affecting Muslim communities. These statements were made as part of AIMIM’s political campaign in the state.
The AIMIM leader has been expanding the party’s activities in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 election. The party has held public meetings in several constituencies and has announced further programmes in places including Shravasti and Azamgarh.
According to reports, AIMIM has been focusing its organisational activities on constituencies where it believes it can build a stronger political base. Party representatives have also indicated that discussions with smaller political groups are taking place, although the final structure of any alliance remains undecided.
The possibility of an alliance is significant because Uttar Pradesh has 403 Assembly constituencies and is one of India’s largest state electoral contests. Political parties are expected to begin intensifying their organisational and electoral preparations as the 2027 election approaches.
AIMIM’s position is that opposition parties seeking to prevent another BJP government in Uttar Pradesh should consider working with the party. Owaisi has publicly invited such parties to discuss a possible arrangement. At the same time, AIMIM has indicated that it will continue its own campaign and organisational expansion even if an alliance is not finalised.
The BJP, Samajwadi Party and other political parties have their own positions and electoral strategies for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh election. The final alliance arrangements, seat-sharing agreements and candidate selections are expected to become clearer as the election process progresses.
For now, Owaisi has set October 2 as the date by which AIMIM intends to announce its alliance decision, if an agreement is reached. Until then, the party is expected to continue discussions with potential partners while conducting public meetings and strengthening its organisational network across Uttar Pradesh.
The latest announcement therefore places AIMIM’s possible alliance strategy among the developing political developments ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Any final alliance, its participating parties and the number of constituencies involved will depend on subsequent negotiations and decisions by the respective parties.
