A fresh political controversy has emerged in the Tamil Nadu Assembly following an exchange between Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and DMK president M K Stalin over remarks concerning Stalin’s political history and a gesture made during an Assembly speech.
The controversy began after Vijay made a hand and jaw movement while referring to Stalin’s arrest under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act during the Emergency period. The gesture was widely interpreted by political opponents and sections of the public as a reference to the injuries Stalin suffered during his imprisonment.
Vijay subsequently clarified his position and said that the gesture was not intentional. He stated that he did not intend to hurt or disrespect anyone and described it as an unintentional expression of body language. His clarification came after the gesture triggered criticism from the DMK and other political leaders.
The issue continued in the Assembly when Stalin responded to Vijay’s remarks. Stalin recalled his experience during the Emergency, when he was arrested under MISA and imprisoned. He referred to the difficulties he faced during that period while responding to Vijay’s comments about his political past.
Stalin also used the Assembly discussion to challenge what he described as inaccurate claims about his father and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. Reports on Stalin’s response indicate that he referred to the injuries he suffered during his imprisonment and the difficult circumstances surrounding his arrest. He also recalled the death of his party colleague Chitti Babu, who died after being imprisoned during the Emergency.

Vijay, who entered electoral politics after a long career in the Tamil film industry, became Tamil Nadu Chief Minister following the 2026 Assembly election. The jaw gesture has become a significant point of political discussion because of its connection to Stalin’s account of his imprisonment during the Emergency. The incident has also raised questions about the importance of maintaining dignity and restraint during legislative debates.
