The Chief Minister said the measures are intended to strengthen the ability of elected representatives to remain connected with people in their respective constituencies.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has announced a new set of support measures for Members of the Legislative Assembly with the stated objective of helping them carry out constituency-related responsibilities more effectively.

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister under Rule 110 of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. According to the announcement, all MLAs will be provided with government vehicle support and financial assistance to help them undertake constituency visits, monitor development projects and respond to public grievances.

Under the new arrangement, a monthly vehicle-related allowance of Rs 75,000 has been announced for MLAs. The amount is intended to cover expenses associated with vehicle use, including fuel, maintenance and driver-related requirements. In addition, Rs 25,000 per month will be provided to enable each MLA to appoint an assistant for office-related work.

The Chief Minister said the measures are intended to strengthen the ability of elected representatives to remain connected with people in their respective constituencies. MLAs regularly need to travel across their constituencies to inspect development works, meet residents and follow up on public complaints.

The government believes that providing dedicated vehicle support could make such constituency-level activities easier. MLAs would be able to travel to different parts of their constituencies without having to depend on personal arrangements or other forms of transportation.

The proposed assistance for an office assistant is also aimed at supporting the administrative responsibilities of legislators. An assistant can help with constituency office coordination, handling communications and organising information relating to public grievances and government schemes.

The announcement comes after a request was raised in the Assembly regarding improved facilities for legislators, particularly those who need to travel extensively within their constituencies. The government has now decided to introduce the support measures as part of its efforts to improve the functioning of MLAs.

The Chief Minister said the new facilities would help legislators monitor government projects more closely. Constituency representatives often play an important role in identifying local issues and bringing them to the attention of government departments.

Regular field visits can also help MLAs assess the progress of infrastructure and welfare projects. These include works relating to roads, public buildings, drinking water, education, healthcare and other essential services.

The government expects the measures to improve communication between MLAs and residents. By having better logistical support, legislators can potentially spend more time visiting different areas and responding to local concerns.

The announcement has also generated reactions among members of the Assembly. Several legislators welcomed the decision and expressed appreciation for the additional support. The measures apply to MLAs across the political spectrum rather than being limited to members of the ruling party.

The financial implications of the announcement are likely to attract attention because the state government will have to allocate funds for vehicle-related expenses and office assistants. The government, however, has presented the measures as administrative support intended to improve constituency service.

The implementation of the scheme will require the necessary administrative and legal procedures. The government is expected to issue appropriate orders covering the vehicle arrangements, allowances and appointment of assistants.

The new support package also highlights the broader role of MLAs beyond their legislative responsibilities. Apart from participating in Assembly proceedings, legislators regularly interact with residents, monitor local development activities and raise constituency issues with government departments.

The government has therefore linked the new facilities directly to public service and constituency-level responsibilities.

The announcement under Rule 110 provides the government's stated policy position, while detailed implementation will depend on subsequent orders and procedures. The exact operational arrangements for vehicles, drivers, maintenance and assistants are expected to be clarified through government notifications.

Overall, the initiative is aimed at giving Tamil Nadu MLAs greater logistical and administrative support to carry out their constituency duties. The government expects the additional facilities to help legislators remain more accessible to the public, monitor development projects and respond more quickly to local grievances.

Apart from participating in Assembly proceedings, legislators regularly interact with residents, monitor local development activities and raise constituency issues with government departments.
