Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced a series of welfare measures in the State Assembly on August 24, with three free cooking gas cylinders a year for eligible beneficiaries and an expanded fare-free bus travel scheme for women among the key announcements. Under the new cooking gas assistance scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive the financial amount for three LPG cylinders every year. The amount will be credited directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries. Vijay also announced the launch of the Vetri Payanam scheme, which expands the existing fare-free bus travel programme for women across Tamil Nadu. Under the scheme, women will be allowed to travel free of charge on Express, LSS and Deluxe government buses operating in metropolitan and urban areas. For inter-district travel, the benefit will cover ordinary-fare government buses operating in mofussil and hilly areas.
The Vetri Payanam scheme is scheduled to come into effect on October 2, which is observed as the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. According to the announcement, there will be no income ceiling for women seeking to use the fare-free travel facility. There will also be no restriction on the number of trips that women can make under the scheme.
Another important aspect of the announcement is the inclusion of transgender persons in the free travel programme. This expands the coverage of the scheme beyond women and provides the eligible group with access to the same fare-free travel facility under the announced provisions.
