INDIA Bloc to Intensify Anti-SIR Campaign With Bengaluru Protest on November 5

The INDIA bloc is preparing to intensify its campaign against the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, with a major protest scheduled at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on November 5. The demonstration will bring together representatives and supporters of several opposition parties that are part of the alliance.

The Bengaluru protest follows a demonstration organised by the INDIA bloc at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on November 1. The alliance has decided to expand its campaign beyond the national capital and take its concerns to different parts of Karnataka.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president B K Hariprasad confirmed the protest during a press conference at the KPCC office in Bengaluru. He said the November 5 demonstration would mark the beginning of a wider state-level agitation, which would subsequently extend to district and taluk levels.

Protest Scheduled at Freedom Park

Freedom Park has been selected as the venue for the November 5 demonstration. Leaders from the Congress and other INDIA bloc constituents are expected to participate in the protest against the SIR exercise.

Hariprasad said the Bengaluru event would continue the opposition alliance's campaign against the revision of electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission. The alliance has also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

According to the Karnataka Congress chief, the opposition parties have decided to intensify their campaign across the country. In Karnataka, the plan is to begin with a state-level demonstration in Bengaluru and then organise protests at district and taluk levels.

The Congress is also mobilising its district-level units to support the campaign and coordinate further demonstrations with other alliance partners.

INDIA Bloc Raises Concerns Over SIR

The Special Intensive Revision is an exercise undertaken by the Election Commission to review and update electoral rolls. The process is intended to improve the accuracy of voter lists by identifying eligible voters and addressing entries that require correction or removal.

However, opposition parties have raised concerns about the manner in which the exercise is being conducted. INDIA bloc leaders have alleged that eligible voters could be excluded from electoral rolls if the process is not implemented carefully.

The alliance has called for the SIR exercise to be scrapped and has demanded safeguards to protect the voting rights of eligible citizens. Its leaders argue that electoral roll revision must be transparent and should not result in genuine voters losing their right to participate in elections.

These concerns and allegations form the basis of the opposition's campaign. The Election Commission's procedures and official electoral records remain important for assessing individual claims about voter deletions or discrepancies.

Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Among Key Demands

The INDIA bloc has made the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar one of its central demands. Hariprasad said the alliance would continue its agitation until the demand was addressed.

CPI(M) Karnataka state secretary K Prakash also outlined the alliance's demands during the press conference. Apart from scrapping the SIR exercise and seeking the CEC's resignation, the opposition parties want changes to the process of appointing the head of the Election Commission.

Prakash said the appointment process should be made more democratic and should follow the directions of the Supreme Court. He also called for the withdrawal of the law that grants permanent immunity to the Chief Election Commissioner.

These demands indicate that the alliance's campaign is not limited to objections over electoral roll revision. It also intends to raise wider questions about the independence, accountability and appointment process of the Election Commission.

Multiple Opposition Parties to Participate

The Bengaluru press conference was attended by representatives of several INDIA bloc constituents. Those present included CPI(M) state secretary K Prakash, CPI leader Saathi Sundaresh, Forward Bloc representatives Mahantesh Shivashankar and Ali, and CPI(ML) leader Clifton D'Rozario.

The participation of leaders from different parties reflects the alliance's effort to coordinate its campaign across Karnataka. The parties are expected to work together in organising the November 5 demonstration and subsequent protests.

The alliance has also indicated that the campaign will be extended beyond Bengaluru. District and taluk-level demonstrations are planned to involve party workers and supporters in different parts of the state.

Campaign Follows Delhi Demonstration

The November 5 protest in Bengaluru comes after the INDIA bloc's demonstration at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on November 1. Opposition leaders gathered there to raise concerns about the Special Intensive Revision and demand action relating to the Chief Election Commissioner.

The Delhi protest was part of the alliance's wider effort to bring attention to its objections to the electoral roll revision process. Following the demonstration, leaders decided to expand the agitation to state and local levels.

The Bengaluru event is therefore an important step in the alliance's effort to take the campaign beyond Delhi. Karnataka is among the states where the opposition parties are planning coordinated demonstrations to mobilise public opinion.

What Happens Next?

The immediate focus of the INDIA bloc in Karnataka is the November 5 demonstration at Freedom Park. Following the protest, the alliance plans to organise further programmes at district and taluk levels.

The campaign is expected to focus on the demand to scrap the SIR exercise, protect eligible voters' names on electoral rolls and seek the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition parties also intend to raise questions about the process of appointing the head of the Election Commission.

The extent of participation in the Bengaluru protest and the response from the Election Commission and other authorities will be important developments to watch.

The INDIA bloc's decision to extend its campaign across Karnataka signals a coordinated political effort to keep the SIR issue in public discussion. As the November 5 demonstration approaches, the alliance is preparing to mobilise its constituent parties and district-level organisations for the next phase of the agitation.

Hariprasad said the Bengaluru event would continue the opposition alliance's campaign against the revision of electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission.
