The selection of Ayush Badoni for India’s ODI series against New Zealand has triggered debate within the cricketing fraternity, with former India cricketer and ex-chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth openly questioning the decision. Badoni was added to the squad after all-rounder Washington Sundar was ruled out due to injury, but the move has divided opinions.
Srikkanth expressed concern over whether Badoni fits the role left vacant by Sundar, pointing out that the injured player provides both batting depth and bowling options. According to him, replacing an all-rounder with a specialist batter alters team balance, especially in the 50-over format where versatility is crucial. He argued that India had other options who could have offered similar skill sets.
The former opener also questioned why players such as Ruturaj Gaikwad or Axar Patel were not considered, noting that both have experience at the international level and could have strengthened the squad. Srikkanth stressed that selection decisions should be based on current team requirements rather than experimentation at a critical stage of a series.
The debate intensified after Srikkanth suggested that Badoni’s selection may have been influenced by his previous association with Gautam Gambhir at Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League. While no official confirmation supports this claim, the remark has added fuel to discussions around transparency and fairness in the selection process.
Team management, however, has defended the decision. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak earlier stated that Badoni was chosen for his adaptability, composure, and ability to perform different batting roles depending on match situations. The selectors reportedly believe that his skill set complements the existing lineup and offers flexibility in the middle order.
Badoni, who is yet to make his ODI debut, has impressed in domestic cricket and the IPL with his calm approach and finishing abilities. His inclusion reflects India’s broader strategy of testing emerging players as part of long-term planning. With several senior players nearing the latter stages of their careers, the management has been keen to broaden the talent pool.
The ODI series against New Zealand is part of India’s preparation for upcoming international commitments, and the selectors have emphasized the importance of exposure and bench strength. While criticism from former players is not uncommon, such discussions underline the high expectations placed on team selection at the international level.
As the series progresses, attention will be on whether Badoni gets an opportunity to play and how he performs if given a chance. His performances could play a key role in shaping future selection debates and addressing concerns raised by critics.
