Chinmay Sutar Creates First-Class Cricket History With Record-Breaking Start for Mizoram
Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar has produced a remarkable beginning to his first-class cricket career, setting a new record for the most runs scored by a batter in his first five innings. The 29-year-old has accumulated 834 runs in his opening five innings, surpassing the previous benchmark of 724 runs held by Australian batter Bill Ponsford.
Sutar achieved the milestone during Mizoram's Ranji Trophy Plate Group match against Arunachal Pradesh at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Anand, Gujarat. He scored 175 runs from 290 deliveries in Mizoram's first innings, strengthening his team's position in the contest.
His latest century was the third of his first-class career and continued a remarkable sequence of performances across the opening matches of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season. Sutar has scored three centuries in four matches, including an unbeaten 400 against Nagaland.
Sutar Surpasses Bill Ponsford's Long-Standing Record
Before Sutar's achievement, Australia's Bill Ponsford held the record for the most runs scored in a batter's first five first-class innings. Ponsford had accumulated 724 runs during his early first-class appearances in the 1920s.
Sutar has moved past that mark with 834 runs from his first five innings. His achievement has attracted attention because it places him ahead of a record that had remained a major benchmark in the early stages of a first-class career for more than a century.
The Mizoram batter has also moved beyond the previous six-innings benchmark of 831 runs associated with Afghanistan's Bahir Shah, according to reports on the record. Sutar's extraordinary run has therefore brought him into the spotlight in domestic cricket.
A Series of Big Scores in the Ranji Trophy
Sutar's record-breaking run has been built on a series of substantial contributions. He began his first-class career against Manipur, scoring 35 and 99 in his first match. Although he narrowly missed a century in the second innings, the performance offered an early indication of his batting ability.
His next major achievement came against Nagaland. Sutar produced an unbeaten 400, becoming only the second Indian batter to score 400 or more in a first-class innings. The previous Indian to achieve the feat was Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, who scored an unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948.
Sutar's 400-run innings was also notable because it was his maiden first-class century. Reaching the 400-run mark in his first century-making performance made the innings an exceptional milestone in the history of the format.
He continued his strong form against Meghalaya, scoring another century, before adding 175 runs against Arunachal Pradesh. These performances have taken his tally to 834 runs in five innings.
Strong Contribution Against Arunachal Pradesh
In the match against Arunachal Pradesh, Sutar played a significant role in helping Mizoram build a commanding first-innings total. Batting at number three, he scored 175 from 290 balls, including 15 boundaries.
Mizoram declared their first innings at 571 for nine, establishing a substantial lead after Arunachal Pradesh had been dismissed for 285. Sutar was the leading run-scorer for Mizoram in the innings and once again demonstrated his ability to convert a good start into a major score.
His innings also extended his sequence of centuries and helped him cross the previous first-five-innings record.
From Mumbai Cricket to Mizoram
Sutar began the current domestic season representing Mizoram after previously being associated with Mumbai cricket. He had played List A cricket for Mumbai but had not made a Ranji Trophy appearance for the 42-time champions before moving to Mizoram.
His performances this season have given him an opportunity to make a strong impression in the longer format. His father, Rajesh Sutar, also played domestic cricket for Mumbai, appearing in first-class and List A matches.
The transition to Mizoram has provided Chinmay with an opportunity to establish himself in first-class cricket, and his early performances have attracted considerable attention.
What Comes Next for Chinmay Sutar?
Sutar's record-breaking beginning has raised expectations about what he could achieve in the remainder of the season. With 834 runs already scored in his first five innings, he has set an exceptional standard for the opening phase of a first-class career.
His next challenge will be to maintain consistency against different bowling attacks and continue contributing to Mizoram's campaign. While a strong domestic season can strengthen a player's prospects, selection for higher levels of cricket depends on several factors, including consistency, team requirements and performances over time.
For now, Sutar's achievement stands out as one of the major individual stories of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season. By surpassing Bill Ponsford's long-standing record, he has made an extraordinary entry into first-class cricket and placed his name among the notable performers in the tournament.
