In a thrilling turn of events on Day 2 of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener in Perth, India found themselves in a commanding position despite posting a modest 150 in their first innings on Day 1. The Indian team, led by captain Jasprit Bumrah, took a crucial 46-run first-innings lead over Australia after the hosts were bowled out for just 104.
The performance from the Indian bowlers, especially Bumrah, was outstanding. Bumrah's 5-wicket haul (5/30) was the standout contribution as he dismantled the Australian batting lineup. Alongside him, Mohammed Siraj’s 2 wickets for 20 runs and debutant Harshit Rana’s 3 wickets for 48 runs were instrumental in reducing Australia to their lowest-ever first-innings score against India in Test cricket. Australia added just 37 runs to their overnight score of 67/7, with Mitchell Starc (26) being the highest run-scorer for the hosts.
India's bowling attack was clinical, and Bumrah's effort, in particular, was a testament to his skill and leadership. This result marked a remarkable turnaround for India, who, despite their low first-innings total, managed to take a significant first-innings lead. India’s victory in this match, if it materializes, would be a rare achievement, as it mirrors past instances where India has defeated Australia despite posting less than 200 in the first innings.
This isn’t the first time India has overcome such odds. Two decades ago, during the 2004 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India was bowled out for a mere 104 in the fourth Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Despite Australia posting 203 in their first innings to claim a lead, India fought back in the second innings with 205 runs. India then bowled out Australia for 93, securing a thrilling 13-run victory.
Similarly, in 1959, under the leadership of Gulabrai Ramchand, India posted just 152 runs in their first innings against Australia, who claimed a 67-run first-innings lead with 219 runs. India, however, mounted a strong response in the second innings, posting 291 runs, and then bowled Australia out for just 105, winning the match by 119 runs.
These historical examples of India defeating Australia despite low first-innings scores highlight India’s resilience and ability to fight back. In the ongoing Perth Test, India’s bowlers are once again proving that a strong bowling performance can turn the tide, even when batting has faltered. As the game progresses, India will look to extend their lead and maintain their dominance to secure a memorable victory in this high-stakes Test.
