Fans attending the second day of the India vs. New Zealand Test match at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune experienced significantly improved conditions, particularly regarding access to drinking water. After facing severe shortages on the first day, the host association took proactive measures to ensure that spectators remained hydrated throughout the day’s play.
On the first day of the match, many fans expressed their frustration due to a lack of available drinking water. With temperatures soaring and humidity levels high, the absence of sufficient hydration options led to widespread dissatisfaction among spectators. To address this issue, the MCA coordinated the distribution of approximately 100,000 liters of reverse osmosis (RO) water in 20-liter cans across various booths within the stadium. This proactive approach aimed to prevent a repeat of the previous day's shortcomings.
On Friday, the association made 3,800 bottles of water, each containing 20 liters, readily available to fans. Additionally, they prepared 500 extra bottles on-site as a backup and secured another batch of 700 bottles stored elsewhere for future needs. These efforts demonstrated the MCA's commitment to ensuring that fans had easy access to adequate drinking water throughout the day, particularly in the hot and humid conditions typical of Pune at this time of year.
MCA officials, including CEO Ajinkya Joshi and secretary Kamlesh Pisal, held a media briefing on Friday, discussing the various issues related to the stadium and emphasizing their dedication to improving fan experience. One of the key points raised was the need for a better media box, as the current arrangements are temporary, even for international fixtures, which can hinder the overall quality of service at the venue.
Despite the efforts to improve water access, concerns about the infrastructure around the stadium persist. The Maharashtra Cricket Association has allocated a nine-acre area for parking, but questions remain about the quality of approach roads leading to the MCA Stadium, which is located in Gahunje, near the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Addressing these infrastructural issues is crucial for enhancing the overall experience for fans traveling to and from the stadium.
After the water shortages on the first day, Kamlesh Pisal issued an apology on behalf of the MCA, expressing sincere regret for the inconvenience caused to fans. He stated, "Our sincere apologies to all the fans for the inconvenience caused. We will ensure things will be alright going forward. We have already addressed the water issue." The delay in water distribution was attributed to a vehicle transporting water from the plant arriving late at the stadium, which compounded the problem of insufficient supplies.
Despite the challenges faced, volunteers and security personnel worked diligently to distribute packaged water bottles from other storage areas. However, the effort took time and did not meet fans' expectations, resulting in a frustrating experience for many. Since last year's ODI World Cup, cricket boards have prioritized providing free drinking water at stadiums as part of their efforts to enhance the spectator experience and ensure that basic amenities are readily available during matches.
In summary, while the MCA made significant strides in addressing the water supply issues for the second day of the Test match, ongoing attention to infrastructure and fan amenities will be essential for maintaining a positive atmosphere for spectators in future events. The proactive measures taken demonstrate the association's commitment to improving the overall match experience, reflecting their dedication to serving cricket fans in India.
