India began their 2026 Test campaign in impressive fashion by defeating Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the opening match at the Galle International Stadium. The victory gave India a 1 0 lead in the two match series and provided an important boost to the team’s World Test Championship campaign.
The match was particularly significant because it was India’s 600th Test match. India celebrated the milestone with a convincing performance across all five days, despite Sri Lanka producing periods of resistance with both bat and ball.
India won the toss and elected to bat first. The visitors eventually posted 462 in their opening innings. Devdutt Padikkal was one of the major contributors, producing an outstanding 167 in his return to Test cricket. His innings provided India with a strong foundation and helped the visitors build a substantial first innings total.
Sri Lanka responded with 284 in their first innings. India therefore carried a significant advantage into their second innings. The Indian batting lineup, however, faced another challenge from the Sri Lankan bowlers and was dismissed for 193.
Rishabh Pant played an important role in India’s second innings by scoring 66 from 69 deliveries. Devdutt Padikkal also contributed with 44 runs after his century in the first innings. Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando claimed four wickets, while spinner Prabath Jayasuriya took three wickets.
India set Sri Lanka a target of 372 runs for victory. Sri Lanka ended the fourth day at 84 for four, leaving the hosts with a difficult task on the final morning. India needed six more wickets to complete the victory, while Sri Lanka required another 288 runs.
The fifth day belonged largely to India’s young left arm spinner Manav Suthar. After taking four wickets in Sri Lanka’s first innings, Suthar produced another outstanding spell in the second innings. He claimed six wickets for 55 runs, finishing the match with a total of 10 wickets.
Sri Lanka fought hard through the middle order, with Sonal Dinusha providing significant resistance. Dinusha scored 84 runs and was one of Sri Lanka’s most reliable batters during the match. However, the Indian bowlers continued to apply pressure and eventually dismissed the hosts for 206.
The 165 run victory was India's first Test win of the series and extended their strong recent record against Sri Lanka. According to the available scorecard information, Sri Lanka have now gone 11 consecutive Tests without defeating India, including nine losses.
For India, the result was also important in the context of the World Test Championship. The victory earned India 12 points and improved their position in the 2025 to 2027 WTC cycle. The result keeps the team in contention for the championship final.
The performances of Padikkal and Suthar were among the biggest positives for India. Padikkal made a major contribution with the bat, while Suthar demonstrated his ability to influence a Test match with his bowling. His 10 wicket haul was particularly important because the Galle surface offered assistance to spin as the match progressed.
India captain Shubman Gill also collected another Test victory as captain. The result gives the team confidence before the second match of the series.
Sri Lanka will now look to make adjustments before the next Test. Their batting showed flashes of resistance, particularly through Dinusha, while their bowling attack also created pressure during India's second innings. However, they will need greater consistency if they are to level the series.
The second Test is scheduled to begin on August 23 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. India will enter the match with a 1 0 advantage, while Sri Lanka will need a victory to keep the series alive.
The Galle victory has therefore provided India with an ideal start to the Sri Lanka tour. The combination of strong batting contributions, effective spin bowling and disciplined execution on the final day allowed India to secure a comprehensive win.
With the series now moving to Colombo, attention will turn towards whether India can complete a series victory or whether Sri Lanka can respond strongly and force the contest into a deciding match.
