IPL Teams Expected to Retain Five Players, No Right to Match Option at Mega Auction: Report

Historically, prior to the IPL 2022 auction, teams were restricted to retaining only four players—up to three Indian players and two overseas players.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced significant changes regarding player retention rules ahead of the highly anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction. In a move that will bring relief to several franchises, the BCCI has decided to allow teams to retain up to five players. However, it has been confirmed that the Right to Match (RTM) option will not be included in this auction, marking a continuation of the policy that has excluded this feature since the 2018 mega auction.

According to reports from The Indian Express, each of the ten teams in the cash-rich league will have the opportunity to retain a maximum of five players. This decision is expected to favor established franchises such as the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who rely heavily on their core player groups to maintain competitive performance and brand loyalty.

For the Mumbai Indians, retaining key players such as Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Rohit Sharma will solidify their strategic advantage going into the auction. Similarly, the Kolkata Knight Riders will benefit from the ability to keep prominent players like Shreyas Iyer, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Rinku Singh. The flexibility to retain a larger pool of players will allow these franchises to avoid difficult decisions about which stars to release, thereby preserving their competitive edge and brand identity.

Historically, prior to the IPL 2022 auction, teams were restricted to retaining only four players—up to three Indian players and two overseas players. This limitation often forced teams into challenging choices regarding which players to let go, impacting their overall team composition and fan engagement.

In addition to the changes in retention rules, the report highlighted that the RTM option will be absent from the upcoming auction. This option allowed franchises to buy back players who had previously represented them by matching the highest bid made by any other team. Its removal means that teams will need to carefully consider their release strategies, as they risk losing key players to rival franchises in the auction process. For example, if KKR decides to release Mitchell Starc with the intention of reacquiring him at a lower price, they will need to navigate the potential for bidding wars with other teams.

Furthermore, team owners have expressed a desire for the BCCI to extend the period between mega auctions to at least four years. This extended timeframe would allow franchises to nurture and develop the young talents they have invested in, leading to a more stable team structure and long-term strategic planning.

As the IPL continues to evolve, these changes in retention rules and the absence of the RTM option are poised to reshape team strategies and dynamics leading up to the 2025 mega auction. With the ability to secure core players, franchises will be better positioned to maintain their competitive stature in the league while also engaging their fanbases more effectively. The next few years promise to be pivotal as teams adjust to these new regulations and prepare for the auction that will set the stage for the next chapter in IPL history.
