KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal Fail on Ranji Trophy Return Ahead of New Zealand A Tour
India batters KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal endured disappointing outings in the opening round of the 2026–27 Ranji Trophy, failing to make significant contributions for their respective teams on October 11. Jaiswal was dismissed without scoring for Mumbai against Chandigarh, while Rahul managed only four runs for Karnataka against Andhra.
Both players have been selected for India A’s upcoming multi-day series against New Zealand A, which begins on October 24. Their return to domestic first-class cricket was an opportunity to gain match practice, but neither batter managed to make the most of his innings.
Jaiswal dismissed for a duck against Chandigarh
Jaiswal, who represented Mumbai in their opening-round match against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium, was dismissed for a duck. The left-handed opener faced 13 balls before losing his wicket to Chandigarh seamer Jagjit Singh Sandhu.
The early dismissal meant Jaiswal could not use the innings to build confidence or spend valuable time at the crease ahead of his upcoming assignments. As an established international batter, he will be expected to convert opportunities into substantial scores, particularly when playing red-ball cricket.
Mumbai's innings, however, continued after his departure. Captain Siddhesh Lad led the batting effort, remaining unbeaten on 80 as Mumbai reached 249 for five. Chandigarh's bowlers continued to search for breakthroughs, with Rohit Dhanda taking three wickets for 44 runs, according to the reported scorecard.
Jaiswal's early dismissal was one of the notable developments from the opening day's play. However, one low score alone does not determine a player's form or readiness for international cricket. The remaining matches in the domestic season will provide further opportunities for him to find rhythm and build consistency.
Rahul scores only four runs for Karnataka
Rahul also had a brief stay at the crease in Karnataka's match against Andhra in Vijayawada. The experienced batter scored four runs before being dismissed in the fourth over, adding to Karnataka's early difficulties.
Andhra's pace bowlers, including Kavuri Saiteja and KV Sasikanth, made early inroads into Karnataka's batting order. The pressure on the visitors increased as wickets fell in quick succession.
Karnataka eventually lost all 10 wickets for 274 runs. Ravichandran Smaran provided the main resistance with an innings of 126, helping the side recover from its early setbacks and reach a more competitive total.
Rahul entered the Ranji Trophy after a strong performance in India's recent one-day international series against the West Indies. He had scored an unbeaten century from 82 balls in his only innings during that series, underlining his ability to make a substantial contribution in limited-overs cricket.
His four-run dismissal in the Ranji Trophy was therefore a contrasting result. The difference between formats can require batters to adjust their approach, particularly in first-class cricket, where patience, shot selection and the ability to leave deliveries are important over longer periods.
Nevertheless, Rahul's domestic performance should be viewed in context. A single innings is only a small sample, and his next opportunities will offer a better indication of his preparation for the challenges ahead.
India A squad prepares for New Zealand A series
Rahul and Jaiswal are among the players selected for India's 15-member A squad for the upcoming multi-day series against New Zealand A. The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the squad on October 6, 2026.
The team will play three matches, with the first scheduled in Lincoln from October 24. The second match will take place in Christchurch from October 31 to November 3, while the final fixture is scheduled for Lincoln from November 7 to 10.
Wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel has been named captain of the India A squad, while Rishabh Pant's participation is subject to fitness. The group includes several players with international and Test experience, providing a competitive environment for preparation and assessment.
The matches are expected to provide opportunities for selected players to gain experience in first-class conditions and demonstrate their form. For batters such as Rahul and Jaiswal, time in the middle will be particularly valuable as they prepare for the demands of longer-format cricket.
The series also gives selectors an opportunity to assess players in match conditions. Performances across multiple innings can offer a more complete picture of a player's technique, temperament and ability to adapt than a single domestic appearance.
Why the Ranji Trophy remains important
The Ranji Trophy continues to play an important role in India's domestic cricket structure. It gives established internationals and emerging players a platform to compete in first-class matches and maintain their readiness for longer-format assignments.
For experienced players, domestic appearances can help them regain rhythm, work on technical areas and spend time at the crease. For younger cricketers, facing recognised international players and strong bowling attacks offers an opportunity to improve their game and make an impression.
Jaiswal and Rahul will now look to make better use of their upcoming opportunities. Their opening-round scores were disappointing, but the domestic season is still in its early stages, leaving time for both players to respond with stronger performances.
The focus will now shift to their preparation for the India A tour and the remaining domestic fixtures available to them. Consistent performances in first-class cricket can strengthen a player's case for future selection, although team selection depends on several factors, including fitness, availability and the requirements of the senior side.
For now, the opening round has produced a difficult start for both batters. Jaiswal's duck and Rahul's four runs will attract attention, but their response in subsequent matches will be more significant in assessing their readiness for the challenges ahead.
