The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced a strong India A squad for the upcoming three match multi day series against New Zealand A. The squad includes experienced international players as well as emerging cricketers who are being considered for future opportunities in the Indian Test setup.
KL Rahul is one of the most prominent names included in the 15 member India A squad. His selection adds considerable experience to the group, particularly in the longer format of the game. Rahul has established himself as an experienced batter for India across formats and his presence in the A team is expected to provide stability to the batting unit.
Dhruv Jurel has been appointed captain of India A for the series. The wicketkeeper batter has increasingly featured in India's plans in red ball cricket and has also taken on leadership responsibilities at the A team level. His appointment gives him another opportunity to develop his leadership experience while contributing with the bat and behind the stumps.
The squad also includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, another important member of India's Test setup. Jaiswal has already made a strong impression in international red ball cricket and his inclusion gives India A another experienced top order option.
Rishabh Pant has also been selected, subject to fitness. His presence adds further experience to the squad and could be particularly useful for the team's preparation in multi day cricket. The final availability of Pant will depend on his fitness status.
Devdutt Padikkal, Ravichandran Smaran, Washington Sundar, Sai Sudarsan and Yash Rathod are among the other batters and all rounders selected. The bowling group includes Auqib Nabi, Akash Deep, Anshul Kamboj, Manav Suthar, Mukesh Choudhary and Mukesh Kumar.
India A will play three multi day matches against New Zealand A. The opening match is scheduled to take place in Lincoln from October 24 to October 27. The second match will be played in Christchurch from October 31 to November 3. The third and final match will return to Lincoln and is scheduled from November 7 to November 10.
The series will offer valuable competitive red ball experience to players who are either part of India's wider Test plans or looking to establish themselves at the international level. A team assignments are an important part of the development pathway because they allow players to compete in international conditions while remaining close to the national selection setup.
The selection of Rahul and Jaiswal also gives India A experienced top order players who can help strengthen the batting department. Jurel's leadership will be closely followed as he balances his responsibilities as captain and wicketkeeper batter.
The New Zealand A series is also taking place alongside India's senior team's tour of New Zealand. The senior Indian side is scheduled to begin its tour with a five match T20I series on October 22. The India A matches will therefore provide an additional opportunity for players in the wider national setup to gain experience in New Zealand conditions.
The India A squad reflects a combination of established international players and younger prospects. For players such as Smaran, Yash Rathod, Auqib Nabi and Anshul Kamboj, the series represents an opportunity to perform against overseas opposition and strengthen their credentials for future selection.
With three multi day matches scheduled across Lincoln and Christchurch, the series is expected to provide useful preparation in conditions that can test batting technique, bowling discipline and adaptability. The performances of Rahul, Jaiswal, Jurel, Pant and the other selected players could also offer the selectors further information as they assess India's red ball depth.
