Sri Lanka began their ODI series against the West Indies with a five-wicket victory in the first match at the Pallekele International Stadium on Sunday (October 20). Despite a strong performance from the tourists, rain interrupted the game, leading to a revised target that Sri Lanka successfully chased down to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

West Indies, opting to bat first after winning the toss, looked promising in the early stages but faced setbacks after losing three quick wickets, leaving them at 54-3. Sherfane Rutherford and Keacy Carty then steadied the innings with a cautious partnership, adjusting to the tricky, rain-affected conditions. Rutherford played a key role, scoring an unbeaten 74 off 85 balls, while Carty contributed a patient 34. Their efforts helped the West Indies reach 185-4 after 38.3 overs before rain halted their momentum.

Following the rain delay, the match was decided by the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, and Sri Lanka was set a target of 232 from 43 overs. However, the hosts did not get off to the best start, stumbling to 45-3 within the first seven overs. West Indies bowlers exploited early swing and seam movement, putting pressure on the Sri Lankan top order.

But Sri Lanka’s comeback was anchored by a crucial 137-run partnership between Charith Asalanka and debutant Nishan Madushka. Asalanka led the charge with a well-constructed 77 off 92 balls, while Madushka impressed in his debut match, scoring 69 off 85 deliveries. Their composed innings turned the game in Sri Lanka’s favor, helping the team recover from their early wobble and putting them in control of the chase.

After Asalanka’s dismissal, Sri Lanka lost another wicket, but by then, they were well within reach of the target. Madushka’s calm approach and timely hitting ensured there were no further hiccups, and Sri Lanka comfortably crossed the finish line in 41.3 overs.

This win gives Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, putting the West Indies under pressure as they look to bounce back in the second ODI.
