Following a disappointing 10-wicket loss to South Africa in their previous match, the West Indies bounced back decisively, setting a positive tone for the remainder of the tournament.

The West Indies launched their ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with an emphatic six-wicket victory over Scotland, showcasing a dominant performance in both batting and bowling. Following a disappointing 10-wicket loss to South Africa in their previous match, the West Indies bounced back decisively, setting a positive tone for the remainder of the tournament.

After winning the toss, Scotland opted to bat first but faced immediate challenges against a disciplined West Indies bowling attack. They lost their opener, Saskia Horley, early in the second over, dismissed by Hayley Matthews for just 11 runs. Chinelle Henry then took control, delivering two back-to-back maiden overs, one of which was a wicket maiden as she bowled Sarah Bryce for a mere two runs. Scotland struggled to find their rhythm, but Ailsa Lister and Kathryn Bryce attempted to stabilize the innings with a crucial partnership.

The duo managed to rebuild the innings, adding 46 runs for the third wicket before Lister was caught off Afy Fletcher’s bowling for 26 runs. Fletcher continued to make her mark, dismissing Priyanaz Chatterji LBW for a duck and narrowly missing a hat-trick. She then claimed the important wicket of Kathryn Bryce, who scored 25 runs, leaving Scotland in a precarious position at 76 for five with just five overs remaining.

As the innings progressed, Darcey Carter provided some resistance with an unbeaten 14 runs, but two wickets fell in the final over, resulting in Scotland finishing their innings at a modest total of 99 for eight. The West Indies' bowlers effectively stifled Scotland's scoring opportunities, with Afy Fletcher ending the match with impressive figures of 3 for 22, while Chinelle Henry contributed with 1 for 10.

Chasing a target of 100 runs, the West Indies encountered early setbacks, losing captain Stafanie Taylor in the very first over. Matthews struggled to find her footing and was dismissed for just eight runs after facing 19 balls, caught out by Chatterji. However, Qiana Joseph stepped up, batting aggressively at No. 3 and displaying intent despite the loss of another partner, Shemaine Campbelle, who was caught and bowled by Olivia Bell for just two runs.

Joseph's resilience shone through as she scored a quick 31 runs off only 18 balls before being dismissed by Bell. With the West Indies now at 59 for four, they still required 41 runs to secure victory. The partnership between Deandra Dottin and Chinelle Henry proved decisive; the duo launched an aggressive assault, quickly adding 42 runs in just 20 deliveries. Dottin was particularly explosive, finishing the match with two sixes and a four off Abtaha Maqsood, sealing a comprehensive victory for her team.

This victory not only marked a successful start for the West Indies in the tournament but also propelled them to the top of Group B, at least temporarily. With upcoming matches against Bangladesh and England on the horizon, the West Indies will look to build on this momentum and continue their pursuit of T20 World Cup glory.
