Former England international Andros Townsend escaped serious injury after being involved in a bizarre pitch accident during a Thai League 1 match in Thailand. The 35-year-old winger was warming up with his PT Prachuap teammates when a motorised pitch roller entered the area and struck him.
The incident took place during the half-time break of PT Prachuap’s match against Pattani FC on September 19. Townsend was involved in a routine passing drill with his teammates when he moved outside the practice area while attempting to play the ball. At that moment, a pitch roller driven by a member of the stadium ground staff moved towards him.
According to reports and video footage circulated online, Townsend appeared not to notice the vehicle approaching. The roller struck his legs and knocked him to the ground. It then passed over his body, with his left leg becoming briefly trapped underneath the machine. The driver stopped the vehicle and attempted to move it away so that Townsend could get free.
The incident shocked Townsend’s teammates and people inside the stadium. However, the former England player was able to get back on his feet and continue with his warm-up. Reports indicated that he avoided serious injury and suffered only minor injuries or bruising.
The incident could have had much more serious consequences because of the size and weight of the pitch-maintenance vehicle. However, Townsend was remarkably able to remain involved with his team. He later came on as a substitute during the closing stages of the match.
PT Prachuap went on to secure a 3-0 victory over Pattani FC. Townsend entered the game in the 93rd minute, replacing Jesper Nyholm, and was able to make a brief appearance despite the unusual accident earlier in the match. His ability to return to the field so soon after the incident attracted considerable attention online.
Townsend also responded to the incident with humour on social media. After footage of the accident circulated, he shared a post referring to the experience and joked about previous away trips to Stoke City. His response helped show that he was in a position to laugh about the frightening incident after escaping serious injury.
Townsend has enjoyed a long professional career in English and international football. He came through the Tottenham Hotspur academy and went on to play for several clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Everton and Luton Town. He also spent time with Turkish club Antalyaspor before continuing his career in Thailand.
The winger represented England between 2013 and 2016, earning 13 senior international caps and scoring three goals. After leaving English football, he continued his career overseas and joined Kanchanaburi Power in Thailand in 2025. He later moved to PT Prachuap.
The unusual accident has since attracted widespread attention because of the unexpected circumstances and Townsend’s quick return to the match. The footage showed how the pitch roller entered the warm-up area while the players were preparing for the second half.
While the incident was frightening, the most important outcome was that Townsend did not suffer a serious injury. His decision to later appear in the match also provided reassurance to supporters following the accident.
The episode has become one of the most unusual moments of Townsend’s recent career. Despite being struck by a heavy pitch-maintenance vehicle, he was able to continue his involvement with the team and later joked about what had happened.
