Arnau Martinez's red card was the pivotal moment in Girona's 4-0 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, a result that left the La Liga side struggling to find their footing in the competition. Despite a promising start, with Girona staying competitive through the first half, the match took a sharp turn in the second half when Martinez was sent off just 10 minutes after the break.
The game began with both teams pushing forward, creating chances at a fast pace. PSV managed to take the lead with goals from Ryan Flamingo and Malik Tillman, putting Girona at a disadvantage going into halftime. Despite being 2-0 down, Girona was far from out of the contest. They recorded seven shots, compared to PSV's 13, showing they were still in the fight.
However, the game shifted dramatically after Arnau Martinez's second yellow card, resulting in a red. The dismissal left Girona down to 10 men, and PSV seized the opportunity. Johan Bakayoko added a third goal just minutes before the final whistle, and an own goal from Ladislav Krejci completed the 4-0 scoreline, giving Girona a humbling defeat.
Girona's manager, Michel, reflected on the game, acknowledging the team's competitive spirit in the first half but ultimately pointing to Martinez’s sending off as the turning point. "The first half of both teams was very good in terms of the pace of play, looking for the opponent's goal," Michel said. "The expulsion was decisive. From there, PSV had chances and deserved to win. In this competition, the small details make a difference."
Martinez, at just 21 years and 194 days old, became the fifth-youngest Spaniard to receive a red card in the Champions League. His red card also made him the youngest Spanish player since Gavi, who was sent off for Barcelona against Porto in October 2023 at the age of 19.
This defeat was especially bitter for Girona as they have now conceded four own goals in just four Champions League matches, setting a new record for the most own goals by a team in a single campaign. Girona currently sit 26th in the table with just one win from their four group-stage matches, leaving them with a challenging road ahead if they are to progress.
Daley Blind, another Girona player, shared his thoughts on the match and agreed with Michel that the red card was a key factor in their downfall. "The first chance was for us, but we conceded a goal from a throw-in, which cannot happen," Blind explained. "After that, we tried to play. It was an open game." Despite their early efforts, the red card left Girona unable to recover, and they were ultimately outclassed by PSV.
With their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread, Girona's next challenge will be against Sturm Graz, where they will need to regroup and address their defensive vulnerabilities, especially as they look to avoid further costly mistakes.
