Arsenal’s interim head coach, Renee Slegers, praised her team for their dominant 4-0 victory over Juventus in the Champions League, a result that moved them into second place in their group, three points ahead of third place. This impressive win showcased the team’s collective strength, with Slegers taking the opportunity to highlight the importance of contributions from all areas of the squad, not just the players who found the back of the net.
Slegers emphasized that while the forwards naturally get attention for scoring goals, it’s essential to recognize the equally critical roles played by other positions. “We had four different goal scorers, and the players up top were performing really well, but I don’t want to overlook the work of the goalkeeper, our back four, and our two defensive midfielders,” she stated. She also singled out Wally and Kim for their excellent midfield performances, underscoring the teamwork that was key to the victory.
This win against Juventus was particularly significant as it marked Slegers' fourth victory in five matches since taking over from Jonas Eidevall. The match itself presented a unique challenge, with Juventus playing a style of football that was different from what Arsenal had encountered in previous games this season. "They play a different kind of football, which we haven’t really faced yet this season," Slegers explained, acknowledging the difficulties of adjusting to an unfamiliar style.
Facing such an intense style of play required Arsenal to adapt their tactics, and the game proved to be both physically and mentally demanding. Slegers expressed her pride in how her team handled the challenge, particularly given the added pressure of an away fixture. "Coming here for an away game, the travelling, and then facing this type of football, which is very intense both psychologically and physically, I’m very proud of the girls and their performance," she said.
Slegers' leadership has brought a sense of resilience and unity to the team, with Arsenal showing their ability to adapt and perform under pressure. The victory against Juventus not only boosts their position in the group but also highlights the depth of the squad and the importance of every player’s contribution to the team’s success.
