Despite the loss, Tedesco praised his team’s efforts, acknowledging the team had never trained or played together before this match.

Belgium’s 1-0 defeat to Israel in the Nations League has left the team in a difficult position, as they were unable to secure a spot in the top two of Group A1. This loss, following a similar setback to Italy just days earlier, means that Belgium now faces a playoff against a Group B runner-up to secure their place in the next stage of the competition.

Belgium’s coach, Domenico Tedesco, cited a severe injury crisis as a significant factor in the team’s disappointing performance. During this international break, Belgium was missing several key players. Captain Kevin De Bruyne was sidelined due to a hamstring injury, while Romelu Lukaku and four other players withdrew from the squad just before the matches. To make matters worse, during the match against Israel, both Leandro Trossard and Zeno Debast picked up injuries, leaving Belgium even more depleted.

Despite these challenges, Tedesco remained positive about the team’s overall prospects. He acknowledged the difficulties but expressed confidence that the team would remain in League A after the upcoming playoffs in March. “We will remain in League A, I am sure of it,” he said, while emphasizing the importance of future performances for World Cup qualification. He added that the recent losses had provided valuable lessons and an opportunity to assess new players, which will help Belgium in future competitions.

Tedesco also reflected on the match against Israel, where Belgium attempted 649 passes, their highest in this Nations League edition. However, they struggled to convert possession into meaningful opportunities, managing only 12 shots compared to Israel’s 10. Belgium’s expected goals (xG) stood at 0.91, slightly higher than Israel’s 0.77. Yarden Shua’s goal in the 86th minute, coming off the bench for Israel, proved to be the decisive moment of the match.

Despite the loss, Tedesco praised his team’s efforts, acknowledging the team had never trained or played together before this match. "We started well, but ultimately, under really difficult circumstances, this is not the result we hoped for," he said. He emphasized that the team's resilience and the lessons learned during this period would help them in their future campaigns.

Looking ahead, Tedesco is focused on the upcoming playoffs in March, where Belgium will have the chance to secure their place in the top tier of the Nations League. The focus for Belgium remains on improving their performance, especially as they look ahead to World Cup qualifying matches. Despite the tough losses, Tedesco’s optimism and commitment to developing the team remain strong.
