The Netherlands completed their Nations League Group A3 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina at Stadion Bilino Polje, bringing their group stage journey to a close. With qualification already secured for the quarter-finals, Ronald Koeman's side finished with nine points, five behind group leaders Germany. Despite the result not affecting their progression, the match provided an opportunity to assess their form heading into the knockout stages.
The Dutch side took control early in the match, with Brian Brobbey scoring in the 24th minute. Brobbey headed in a well-placed cross from Noa Lang, following a short corner routine that left the Bosnia defense scrambling. At this point, the Netherlands appeared to be cruising toward a comfortable win, but Bosnia-Herzegovina showed their resilience after the break.
In the second half, Bosnia mounted a strong response and equalized in the 67th minute. Ermedin Demirovic was in the right place at the right time, pouncing on a rebound after Edin Dzeko's shot was saved by Dutch goalkeeper Mark Flekken. The goal brought Bosnia level and allowed them to snatch a point, despite their position at the bottom of the group with only two points.
Bosnia’s defensive resolve was crucial, particularly after the break. In the first half, the Netherlands dominated possession, registering an expected goals (xG) of 1.29, while Bosnia struggled offensively, failing to record any shots on target and producing an xG of just 0.54. However, in the second half, Bosnia found more attacking rhythm, producing three shots on target, compared to the Netherlands' zero. Their second-half xG of 0.46 surpassed the Netherlands’ 0.37, reflecting their improved performance after the break.
Notably, in the first half, Jorrel Hato made a crucial clearance off the line to deny Dzeko, who later had a goal ruled out for a foul. Despite Bosnia’s difficult start to the game, they fought back valiantly and were rewarded with the draw. The result marked a bittersweet conclusion to Bosnia's Nations League campaign, as they finished at the bottom of the group. Nevertheless, their performance against a strong Dutch side showcased their tactical adjustments and determination to end their group stage run on a high note.
For the Netherlands, the draw was a mere footnote to an already successful campaign, having secured a spot in the quarter-finals. However, the match did raise some concerns about their ability to break down teams when in control and to maintain their intensity when faced with a determined opponent. Bosnia, though relegated to the bottom of the group, showed resilience and fought for every point, providing a strong foundation to build upon for future competitions.
